This book was released on 2008 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book examines interpreter-mediated medical encounters and focuses primarily on the phenomenon of bilingual health care. Elaine Hsieh has put together over 15 hours of interpreter-mediated medical encounters, interview data with 26 interpreters from 17 different cultures/languages, 39 health care providers from 5 clinical specialties, and surveys of 293 providers from 5 clinical specialties. The depth and richness of the data allows for the presentation of a theoretical framework that is not restricted by language combination or clinical contexts. This will be the first book of its kind that includes not only interpreters’ perspectives but also the needs and perspectives of providers from various clinical specialties. Bilingual Health Communication presents an opportunity to lay out a new theoretical framework related to bilingual health care and connects the latest findings from multiple disciplines. Book The Nordic Models in Political Science

Download or read book The Nordic Models in Political Science written by Oddbjørn Knutsen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries-Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden-are frequently considered a distinct group of countries in political science studies. The term 'Nordic model(s)' is sometimes used to describe the policies pursued by these countries. The aim of this book is to examine whether there is one or several Nordic model(s), whether there have been any changes over time in the distinctiveness of the Nordic countries, and when and why the Nordic model(s) emerged. Moreover, in light of recent global economic, legislative, and political integration, will this Nordic distinctiveness last? The Nordic Models in Political Science examines Nordic models in several key areas of political science, such as state- and nation-building, political parties and party systems, determinants of party choice, representation and parliamentarism, gender and politics, central governmental institutions, regional and local governments, interest intermediation and interest group representation, and welfare state and knowledge regimes. This book provides an introduction for students and academic readers interested in Nordic politics in general and Nordic models in particular. *** This is a thorough and balanced assessment of the 'Nordic model'. It shows that, in spite of change and transnational convergence, distinctive features of the Nordic states have survived, producing substantially different outcomes in important policy fields. --Michael Keating, Professor of Politics, Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh [Subject: Politics, Nordic Studies]

Book The Bridge of the Golden Horn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bridge of the Golden Horn is a coming-of-age novel, a sentimental education that is also a political, cultural and intellectual one. In 1966, at the age of 16, the unnamed heroine lies about her age and signs up as a migrant worker in Germany. She leaves Istanbul, works on an assembly line in West Berlin making radios, and lives in a women's factory hostel. But ?zdamar's novel is not about the problems of assembly line work - it's a witty, picaresque account of a precocious teenager refusing to become wise, of a hectic four years lived between Berlin and Istanbul, of a young woman who is obsessed by theatre, film, poetry and left-wing politics. These are sometimes grim years, particularly in Turkey, but they also have a hope and optimism that seem almost unimaginable today.

Book Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence

Download or read book Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence written by Wieland Kiess and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity in childhood and adolescence has reached epidemic proportions in all industrialized countries around the world. Its impact on individual lives as well as on health economics has to be recognized by physicians and the public alike. Among the most common consequences of obesity in the adolescent are hypertension, dyslipidemia, back pain and psychosocial problems. Therapeutic strategies include psychological and family therapy, lifestyle/behavior modification and nutrition education. The role of regular exercise and exercise programs is emphasized. Surgical procedures and drugs used in adult obesity are still not generally recommended for obese adolescents. This book aims to increase physicians knowledge and understanding of obesity in childhood and adolescence as well as to further public awareness of the health burden and economic dimension of obesity at a young age. Several chapters deliver insights into the basic understanding of which factors contribute to or prevent the development of overweight and obesity in young people. Other contributions provide tools for the clinician to manage the care of the child and adolescent with overweight/obesity. In addition, knowledge from the latest scientific studies on the molecular biology of obesity is also presented.

Book Comparing Super Diversity

Download or read book Comparing Super Diversity written by Fran Meissner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of ‘super-diversity’ has received considerable attention since it was introduced in Ethnic and Racial Studies in 2007, reflecting a broadening interest in finding new ways to talk about contemporary social complexity. This book brings together a collection of essays which empirically and theoretically examine super-diversity and the multi-dimensional shifts in migration patterns to which the notion refers. These shifts entail a worldwide diversification of migration channels, differentiations of legal statuses, diverging patterns of gender and age, and variance in migrants’ human capital. Across the contributions, super-diversity is subject to two modes of comparison: (a) side-by-side studies contrasting different places and emergent conditions of super-diversity; and (b) juxtaposed arguments that have differentially found use in utilizing or criticizing ‘super-diversity’ descriptively, methodologically or with reference to policy and public practice. The contributions discuss super-diversity and its implications in nine cities located in eight countries and four continents. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Book Diversity Management in the UK

Download or read book Diversity Management in the UK written by Anne-marie Greene and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and critical review of the global scholarly literature on diversity, this book presents findings from original UK-based research involving in-depth organizational case studies, interviews, observation and documentary data from over fifty organizations. Analyzing the findings from the perspective of key stakeholder groups - diversity practitioners, line-managers, trade union equality officers, workplace trade union representatives and employees, it addresses a range of questions, including: How is the diversity concept developing in the UK? Has the UK deconstructed and reconstructed the diversity concept to fit with the legal, social and economic context of UK organizations? How are organizations in the public and private sectors responding in practical terms to the diversity concept? What is the legacy of the traditional equal opportunity concept? What are the experiences of different organizational stakeholders of diversity management? Whose interests does diversity management serve? Looking at many of the weaknesses associated with more traditional equal opportunity policy approaches, this book is excellent reading for all students of international business, entrepreneurship and small businesses.
