Book Solving Network Design Problems via Decomposition Aggregation and Approximation

Download or read book Solving Network Design Problems via Decomposition Aggregation and Approximation written by Andreas Bärmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Bärmann develops novel approaches for the solution of network design problems as they arise in various contexts of applied optimization. At the example of an optimal expansion of the German railway network until 2030, the author derives a tailor-made decomposition technique for multi-period network design problems. Next, he develops a general framework for the solution of network design problems via aggregation of the underlying graph structure. This approach is shown to save much computation time as compared to standard techniques. Finally, the author devises a modelling framework for the approximation of the robust counterpart under ellipsoidal uncertainty, an often-studied case in the literature. Each of these three approaches opens up a fascinating branch of research which promises a better theoretical understanding of the problem and an increasing range of solvable application settings at the same time.

Book The Disconnect Patterns

Download or read book The Disconnect Patterns written by Raj Karamchedu and published by Saaranga Books. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the disconnect patterns that appear repeatedly in a high technology company with operations in the U.S. and in China. "It is very difficult to work with China folks," ... "The U.S. team does not understand China." Disconnects like these are at the center of most China-U.S. companies. They run deep. They do not spare anything, contaminating the company's day-to-day decisions, its execution and its communication. This book exposes such disconnect patterns. When a China-U.S. company is infected with these disconnect patterns, it is like being thrown into a big washing machine, into that irreconcilable mix of the U.S. and China skill differences, time differences, language differences, geographical distance and culture differences - and spinning out of control into a maelstrom of execution failures, product delays, unhappy customers and eventually, layoffs. Based on the author's experience as a COO and VP of product marketing in Legend Silicon, a pioneering China-U.S. fab-less semiconductor company, this book suggests ways to think about these disconnect patterns. It won't give you easy solutions. But it will help you get a start. After that you are on your own. Most revealingly, this book humanizes these disconnects by setting them in a fictional company, Emory Semiconductors. By showing the real-world struggles of the Emory employees, and showing how, after a crushing loss of their #1 customer, they crawl their way back out of the hole, it suggests directions, so you may craft your own solutions that fit your company, before it is too late to act. The arrival of this book is a calming event in the turbulent day-to-day world of China-U.S. high technology company managers.

But there is a darkness bleeding through the veil, tearing spiritlife out by the roots, leaving a lifeless void in its wake. The seasons have stopped turning, life withers where it should flourish, and vicious raiders prowl the lands. And in the heart of the darkness, a mad, broken god crouches, playing puppet master with the human race. Fae is a gifted healer, and the only human in the elven tree-city of Arolynos. Brought to Arolynos as a young orphan, she remembers nothing of her life beforehand, but she has felt the eyes of the spirits her whole life. Never before have they deigned to speak to her. Until the day the trees scream. The spirits are dying, and the world is dying with them. Gifted with a seed of power by the spirits themselves, Fae is the only one who can save them. Book The Oxford Handbook of Emotion Social Cognition and Problem Solving in Adulthood

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Emotion Social Cognition and Problem Solving in Adulthood written by Paul Verhaeghen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the field of socio-emotional development and aging has rapidly expanded, with many new theories and empirical findings emerging. This trend is consistent with the broader movement in psychology to consider social, motivational, and emotional influences on cognition and behavior. The Oxford Handbook of Emotion, Social Cognition, and Problem Solving in Adulthood provides the first overview of a new field of adult development that has emerged out of conceptualizations and research at the intersections between socioemotional development, social cognition, emotion, coping, and everyday problem solving. This field roundly rejects a universal deficit model of aging, highlighting instead the dynamic nature of socio-emotional development and the differentiation of individual trajectories of development as a function of variation in contextual and experiential influences. It emphasizes the need for a cross-level examination (from biology and neuroscience to cognitive and social psychology) of the determinants of emotional and socio-emotional behavior. This volume also serves as a tribute to the late Fredda Blanchard-Fields, whose thinking and empirical research contributed extensively to a life-span developmental view of emotion, problem solving, and social cognition. Its chapters cover multiple aspects of adulthood and aging, presenting developmental perspectives on emotion; antecedents and consequences of emotion in context; everyday problem solving; social cognition; goals and goal-related behaviors; and wisdom. The landmark volume in this new field, The Oxford Handbook of Emotion, Social Cognition, and Problem Solving in Adulthood is an important resource for cognitive, developmental, and social psychologists, as well as researchers and graduate students in the field of aging, emotion studies, and social psychology.

Book Learning to Solve Complex Scientific Problems

Download or read book Learning to Solve Complex Scientific Problems written by David H. Jonassen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem solving is implicit in the very nature of all science, and virtually all scientists are hired, retained, and rewarded for solving problems. Although the need for skilled problem solvers has never been greater, there is a growing disconnect between the need for problem solvers and the educational capacity to prepare them. Learning to Solve Complex Scientific Problems is an immensely useful read offering the insights of cognitive scientists, engineers and science educators who explain methods for helping students solve the complexities of everyday, scientific problems. Important features of this volume include discussions on: *how problems are represented by the problem solvers and how perception, attention, memory, and various forms of reasoning impact the management of information and the search for solutions; *how academics have applied lessons from cognitive science to better prepare students to solve complex scientific problems; *gender issues in science and engineering classrooms; and *questions to guide future problem-solving research. The innovative methods explored in this practical volume will be of significant value to science and engineering educators and researchers, as well as to instructional designers.
