Ce cahier, construit autour de la double notion "ethique de la recherche et Ethique clinique", constitue un véritable bilan d'expériences de la pratique d'une réflexion éthique sur la recherche, la thérapeutique et les soins en médecine et en biologie. Le Laboratoire d'Ethique Médicale et de Santé Publique de l'Université René-Descartes-Paris V, dispense la seule formation doctorale française existant, à ce jour, dans le domaine de l'éthique médicale et biologique. Il coordonne, également, un Diplôme Inter-Universitaire (DIU) associant 15 Universités françaises à la réflexion sur "l'Ethique et les pratiques médicales", dans le cadre de la formation continue des professionnels de santé.

Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.
