On ignore généralement que la détermination du sens de son entreprise est bien antérieure, avant même qu'il ne découvre le problèm du langage. Ces deux écrits, inachevés, restés à l'état de brouillons et publiés seulement au début de ce siècle, peuvent être datés de 1796 et 1797. Ils sont intéressants à bien des égards. Ils constituent l'achèvement d'une réflexion menée depuis 1790, sur fond d'une assimulation du criticisme, dans plusieurs champs du savoir et d'importantes dimensions de l'expérience humaine (politique, histoire, esthétique, etc.). Ils se donnent comme un effort, mené d'une manière certes encore spéculative, pour thématiser ce qui apparaît à Humboldt comme l'exigence de l'époque, savoir ce qu'il en est de l'homme, et cerner les contours d'une anthropologie philosophique d'un type nouveau. Mais, s'ils condensent le passé d'une pensée, ces textes valent aussi comme première formulation relativement claire de ce qui s'accomplira bien plus tard sous les traits d'une philosophie du langage. Le sens de la tentative est désigné: élaborer le concept de science humaine, ici essentiellement à travers la recherche d'un fondement de la psychologie, saisir l'articulation de cette nouvelle connaissance de l'homme avec la philosophie et ainsi, à partir de la prise de conscience du chemin parcouru, et de la caractérisation du siècle qui s'achève, comprendre la tâche assignée à l'humanité par la modernité.

Book excerpt: Fictional writing has an important mnemonic function for the Afro-Carib-bean community. It facilitates an encounter between contemporary societies and their historical origins. The representation of diasporic trauma in the novels of Fred D’Aguiar, John Hearne, and Caryl Phillips challenges territorial under¬standings of nationality and raises awareness of the eurocentric basis of Western historiography. Slavery is a recurring motif of the nine novels analysed in this study. They narrate the fates of silenced victims who all share the traumatic experience of racial violence even if otherwise separated through time, space, gender and age. These charismatic fictional characters facilitate an empathic access to the history of slavery that goes beyond the anonymity of traditional historical sources. Their most private and intimate sorrows make the traumatic conditions of slavery appear much less remote and reveal their suffering. The euphemistic and distorting selection of the events that has been passed down by the dominant culture is thus countered by a relentless display of historical violence. These literary images establish an important symbolic repertoire and introduce powerful founding myths of the diaspora. In spite of the traumatic foundations of the community, the nine novels display considerable optimism about the possibility of a convivial future that transcends racial boundaries.The capacity and willingness to improvise and adapt to new environments and to do so even in face of a traumatic heritage can be regarded as the most important precondition for positive future developments within the matrix of a rapidly transforming global environment.
