Book excerpt: The X-ray spectra of (almost equal to)200 AGN collected from Swift-BAT were analyzed to test the Unified Model for AGN. Specifically, the photon indices, high energy cutoffs, and reflection components of Sy1 and Sy2 were compared. Under the Unified Model, the photon indices and reflection components for Sy1 should be larger than Sy2 and the high energy cutoffs should be the same. Fitting a simple power law model to the sample spectra proved to be insufficient. The PEXRAV model fit the spectra of the Sy1 and Sy2 significantly better, indicating that a reflection component and/or high energy cutoff exists as the Unified Model expects. Using both the simple power law and PEXRAV models it was concluded that in the population studied, Sy1 had a larger photon index than Sy2, as expected by the Unified Model. For Sy1 and Sy2, the reflection components were found to be compatible, but given the large errors, this finding cannot be said to be evidence against the Unified Model. However, it was concluded that Sy1 and Sy2 have different high energy cutoffs, which is unexpected under the Unified Model.

This review describes the most recent advances in the study of the extragalactic soft X-ray background and what we can learn about its constituents. The deepest pointed observations with the ROSAT PSPC are discussed. The logN-logS relation is presented, which reaches to the faintest X-ray fluxes and to the highest AGN surface densities ever achieved. The N(>S) relation shows a 2 density in excess of 400 deg- at the faintest fluxes and a flattening below the Einstein Deep Survey limit. About 60% of the extragalactic background has been resolved in the deepest field. Detailed source spectra and first optical and radio identifications will be discussed. The results are put into perspective of the higher energy X -ray background. Key words: X-rays, background radiations, active galactic nuclei. 1. Introduction The extragalactic X-ray background (XRB), discovered about 30 years ago, has been studied extensively with many X-ray experiments, in particular with the satel lites HEAO I and II (see ego Boldt 1987) and with ROSAT (e. g. Hasinger et aI. , 1993). Figure 1 shows a compilation of some of the most recent spectral measure ments for the X-ray background. Book excerpt: This book discuss new recent and exciting results in the field of accretion and ejection physics onto supermassive black holes at the center of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Through a uniform and systematic analysis of the X-ray spectra of a large sample of Seyfert and radio galaxies observed with the XMM-Newton and Suzaku satellites, here we report the statistical significance of blue-shifted Fe K absorption lines at energies higher than 6 keV. A curve of growth analysis and detailed modeling are reported as well. This allows to estimate the general parameters of the associated ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). They are found to be common, highly ionized, massive and with mildly-relativistic velocities. Their location is very close to the accreting supermassive black hole, consistent with being accretion disk outflows. Their mechanical power is also high enough to significantly affect the surrounding environment, therefore contributing to the feedback between the central black hole and the host galaxy. These results have been recently featured in conjunct press releases by NASA, the European Space Agency and the National Italian Institute for Astrophysics.

Book excerpt: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) exhibit strong, rapid optical luminosity fluctuations that are often described as stochastic (exhibiting intrinsic randomness). The physical mechanisms that produce stochastic fluctuations may be studied by characterizing the correlation structure of such data in both the time domain and the frequency domain. We find evidence that AGN do not exhibit a universal optical PSD; the PSD shape (or light curve correlation structure) may be a function of fundamental AGN properties. In this work, we develop an application of continuous-time autoregressive moving average models (CARMA) to AGN optical light curves, and we discuss their relationships to more traditional techniques such as the structure function (SF) and the power spectral density (PSD). We present a study of AGN variability using the Damped Harmonic Oscillator (DHO) or CARMA(2,1) model. We estimate DHO timescales and optical variability amplitudes for 7492 objects with both SDSS (Stripe 82) r-band and CRTS V-band light curves. We employ clustering methods (t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding) in this work to test the non-universality of AGN variability (deviations from the damped random walk; DRW or CARMA(1,0)). This approach groups together light curves with similar correlation structure as described by DHO timescales. We identify three classes of AGN variability. We find a "long memory" variability class characterized by milder variability amplitudes ($\sim12\%$) and steeper SFs than DRWs.
