Download or read book Injustice Inc written by Daniel L. Hatcher and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unflinching exposé of how the family, juvenile, and criminal justice systems monetize the communities they purport to serve and trap them in crushing poverty Injustice, Inc. exposes the ways in which justice systems exploit America's history of racial and economic inequality to generate revenue on a massive scale. With searing legal analysis, Daniel L. Hatcher uncovers how courts, prosecutors, police, probation departments, and detention facilities are abandoning ethics to churn vulnerable children and adults into unconstitutional factory-like operations. Hatcher reveals stark details of revenue schemes and reflects on the systemic racialized harm of the injustice enterprise. He details how these corporatized institutions enter contracts to make money removing children from their homes, extort fines and fees, collaborate with debt collectors, seize property, incentivize arrests and evictions, enforce unpaid child labor, maximize occupancy in detention and "treatment" centers, and more. Injustice, Inc. underscores the need to unravel these predatory operations, which have escaped public scrutiny for too long.

Download or read book Angel on a Freight Train written by Peter C. Baldwin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angel on a Freight Train examines the experiences of Samuel Edward Warren (1831–1909), a teacher and college professor in Troy, New York, who struggled to reconcile his same-sex erotic desires with his commitment to a Christian life. Unlike twenty-first-century evangelicals who try to "pray the gay away," Warren discerned no fundamental conflict between his faith and his attraction to younger males. Growing up in the antebellum Northeast, in a culture that permitted and even celebrated emotional bonds between men, he strove to build emotionally intense relationships in many overlapping forms—friendship, pedagogy, evangelism, and romance—which allowed him to enjoy intimacy with little effort at concealment. However, as he passed into mature manhood and built a prestigious career, Warren began to feel that he should have grown out of romantic friendships, which he now feared had become emotionally and physically excessive. Based on Warren's deeply introspective and previously unexplored diaries, Angel on a Freight Train traces his youthful freedom and sensuality, his attempt to join with younger men in a spirit of loving mentorship, and, finally, the tortured introspection of a man whose age seemed to shut him out from an idyllic lost world. In the end, Warren came to believe rather sorrowfully in a radical division between his angelic, ideal self and what he called "the freight train of animal life below."
Download or read book How to Laugh at Death and Taxes written by Barbara Amsden and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for everyone at some time in their life. If you’re breathing, this book’s for you... or your parents, friends, teenagers moving into their first apartment, newlyweds, new parents, siblings, ... oh, and the person or people you name as executor. Hope to be a beneficiary or heir? Yup, you too. Think you can do it alone? Be my guest, but first Google “executor horror stories.” What makes this book different? • It’s four for the price of one: You can use it when you’re naming, accepting to be, or serving as executor, and if you’re an heir or beneficiary. • It’s by a layperson who survived: Most of what you’ll find about naming, being, and dealing with executors comes from legal, financial, or tax experts, and governments. Makes sense. For them, death is a growth industry. But for you, it’s about naming someone you trust to look after your affairs when you die, understanding the effort and risks if you’ve been asked to be an executor, managing an estate effectively if you’re acting as one, and knowing where you stand if you expect to inherit. • It offers useful tools: The book provides plain-language explanations, checklists, templates, and tips. • It’s long-lasting: While legal, tax, accounting, and financial rules change, and the book mainly uses Ontario examples, the process to follow and the questions to ask experts will not. Also, the approach is generally similar to that in many other countries. • Caution: To help relieve the subject's misery and tedium, this book uses humour—be warned!

Download or read book Sweet Greeks written by Ann Flesor Beck and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gus Flesor came to the United States from Greece in 1901. His journey led him to Tuscola, Illinois, where he learned the confectioner's trade and opened a business that still stands on Main Street. Sweet Greeks sets the story of Gus Flesor's life as an immigrant in a small town within the larger history of Greek migration to the Midwest. Ann Flesor Beck's charming personal account recreates the atmosphere of her grandfather's candy kitchen with its odors of chocolate and popcorn and the comings-and-goings of family members. "The Store" represented success while anchoring the business district of Gus's chosen home. It also embodied the Midwest émigré experience of chain migration, immigrant networking, resistance and outright threats by local townspeople, food-related entrepreneurship, and tensions over whether later generations would take over the business. An engaging blend of family memoir and Midwest history, Sweet Greeks tells how Greeks became candy makers to the nation, one shop at a time.
