Book Probability Distribution and Asymptotic Variance of Strong Irradiance Fluctuations of Optical Waves in Turbulent Media

Download or read book Probability Distribution and Asymptotic Variance of Strong Irradiance Fluctuations of Optical Waves in Turbulent Media written by L. R. Bissonnette and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asymptotic solutions for the first-and second-order statistical moments of the amplitude of a plane optical wave propagating in a turbulent atmosphere are derived from Maxwell's equations. These solutions show that the irradiance variance would diverge to infinity if the probability distribution were log-normal but that it would tend to unity if the distribution were normal. Therefore, the widely used hypothesis of log-normal probability distribution is incompatible with the experimental observation of the saturation of the irradiance variance. An order of magnitude estimate of the propagation distance characteristic of these asymptotic solutions indicates that they should apply in the saturation region. These results have obvious implications with regard to the modelling of the effects of turbulence on long range atmospheric propagation of visible and infrared laser beams.

Book Irradiance Statistics of an Optical Wave in a Turbulent Medium

Download or read book Irradiance Statistics of an Optical Wave in a Turbulent Medium written by R. F. Lutomirski and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The probability distribution for the intensity fluctuations of an optical wave has received considerable attention in the recent literature. Tatarski has claimed the distribution in I in the far field (where geometric optics is not applicable) to be log-normal (i.e., lnI is normal) by applying the central limit theorem to the first order Rytov solution. It has recently been shown that it is necessary to retain the second order Rytov term in order to compute the standard deviation of the intensity fluctuations correct to first order in n1. Hence, Tatarski's derivation of a log-normal distribution function for propagation paths dominated by single scattering cannot be valid. In fact, it can easily be seen that the only first order function (proportional to n1, the index of refraction fluctuations), which gives the correct mean and standard deviation for the intensity, is a linear one. Hence, the correct first order statistics are given only by the first order Born approximation, and application of the central limit theorem then yields a normally distributed intensity distribution. This result should be valid for propagation paths small compared to the single scattering length, Lc, but the experimental evidence supports a log-normal rather than a normal distribution. (Author).

Book Experimental Investigations of Optical Propagation in Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book Experimental Investigations of Optical Propagation in Atmospheric Turbulence written by Michael W. Fitzmaurice and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pertinent theoretical background and the results of a group of experiments conducted over 0.4- and 1.17-km near-ground horizontal ranges are presented. (1) The log-amplitude variances for HeNe (0.633 μm) and CO2 (10.6 μm) laser beams were found to have a ratio of 26.8, which is in close agreement with the predictions of Rytov-based spherical-wave theory. (2) Published measurements of the saturation level of the log-amplitude variance are reviewed and several inconsistencies noted. (3) The spatial correlation function of irradiance field was measured and found to agree with theory. The degree of correlation between different frequency beams which had traversed the same optical path was also measured and compared to theory. The data exhibited an unacceptably large scatter and did not show the wavelength dependence. (4) The log-normal, Rayleigh, and Rice probability distributions are discussed in terms of their applicability to irradiance statistics. Relatively weak 10.6 μm irradiance fluctuations were found to be equally well described by the log-normal and Rice distributions; strong fluctuations obtained at 0.488 μm were clearly best described by the log-normal distribution.

Book Irradiance Statistics Modulation Transfer Function and Phase Structure Function of an Optical Wave in a Turbulent Medium

Download or read book Irradiance Statistics Modulation Transfer Function and Phase Structure Function of an Optical Wave in a Turbulent Medium written by Harold T. Yura and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of experimentally observed far-field irradiance statistics, suggesting an approach to calculating the probability distribution for intensity fluctuations of an optical wave in a turbulent medium and expressions for measuring important wave characteristics. Two theoretical treatments of probability distribution are investigated. Because none of the proposed theories can account for irradiance statistics in a consistent manner, it is suggested that a modified geometric optics approach would lead to an improved quantitative understanding of the phenomena. Expressions are derived for measuring wave phase structure function and modulation transfer function. Results are useful in determining the limited resolution obtainable in forming an image through a turbulent medium, as well as in calculating the signal-to-noise ratio of an optical heterodyne detection system. Book Stochastic Equations Theory and Applications in Acoustics Hydrodynamics Magnetohydrodynamics and Radiophysics Volume 1

Download or read book Stochastic Equations Theory and Applications in Acoustics Hydrodynamics Magnetohydrodynamics and Radiophysics Volume 1 written by Valery I. Klyatskin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph set presents a consistent and self-contained framework of stochastic dynamic systems with maximal possible completeness. Volume 1 presents the basic concepts, exact results, and asymptotic approximations of the theory of stochastic equations on the basis of the developed functional approach. This approach offers a possibility of both obtaining exact solutions to stochastic problems for a number of models of fluctuating parameters and constructing various asymptotic buildings. Ideas of statistical topography are used to discuss general issues of generating coherent structures from chaos with probability one, i.e., almost in every individual realization of random parameters. The general theory is illustrated with certain problems and applications of stochastic mathematical physics in various fields such as mechanics, hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, acoustics, optics, and radiophysics.
