Book Probabilities and Values of Early Exercise

Download or read book Probabilities and Values of Early Exercise written by James N. Bodurtha and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article analyzes fundamental differences between American spot and futures options. These options differ in their early exercise probabilities and values, and in option buyers' exercise behavior. We find two key results: one theoretical and one empirical. First, unlike spot options, some futures options' early exercise probabilities and values do not correspond. Specifically, increased volatility raises the early exercise premium for in-the-money futures calls, but lowers the associated early exercise probability. Similarly, increasing the domestic interest rate raises the futures put early exercise premium, while lowering the associated early exercise probability. Second, observed early exercise experience of Philadelphia Stock Exchange spot options and Chicago Mercantile Exchange futures options is consistent with optimal early exercise behavior prescribed by a standard American option pricing model. Both types of option exercise events occur at or near the modeled early exercise boundaries.

Book The Dark Side of Valuation

Download or read book The Dark Side of Valuation written by Aswath Damodaran and published by FT Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Definitive Guide to Valuing Hard-to-Value Companies: Fully Revised for Today’s Financial Markets Valuing money-making companies that have long histories and established business models is straightforward. It is when you encounter difficult-to-value companies that you feel the urge to go over to the dark side of valuation—where you abandon first principles and create new metrics. Aswath Damodaran looks at a range of these companies, from start-ups in new businesses to distressed companies, from banks facing regulatory turmoil to commodity firms, and from emerging market upstarts to multinationals that spread across geographies and businesses. With each grouping, he helps you examine the call of the dark side and its practices and frameworks to value these firms. To answer these questions, Aswath looks at companies across the life cycle and in different markets, from Uber and Shake Shack at one end of the spectrum to Vale, Royal Dutch, and United Technologies at the other end. In the process, you learn how to Deal with “abnormally low” and negative risk-free rates in valuation Adapt to dynamic and changing risk premiums Value young companies that are disrupting existing businesses Analyze commodity and cyclical companies across cycles Value a company as the sum of its parts or as an aggregation of its users/subscribers and customers Determine the difference between pricing and valuation, and why some investments can only be priced

Book Fundamentals of Probability A First Course

Download or read book Fundamentals of Probability A First Course written by Anirban DasGupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory is one branch of mathematics that is simultaneously deep and immediately applicable in diverse areas of human endeavor. It is as fundamental as calculus. Calculus explains the external world, and probability theory helps predict a lot of it. In addition, problems in probability theory have an innate appeal, and the answers are often structured and strikingly beautiful. A solid background in probability theory and probability models will become increasingly more useful in the twenty-?rst century, as dif?cult new problems emerge, that will require more sophisticated models and analysis. Thisisa text onthe fundamentalsof thetheoryofprobabilityat anundergraduate or ?rst-year graduate level for students in science, engineering, and economics. The only mathematical background required is knowledge of univariate and multiva- ate calculus and basic linear algebra. The book covers all of the standard topics in basic probability, such as combinatorial probability, discrete and continuous distributions, moment generating functions, fundamental probability inequalities, the central limit theorem, and joint and conditional distributions of discrete and continuous random variables. But it also has some unique features and a forwa- looking feel.

Book Financial Accounting and Equity Markets

Download or read book Financial Accounting and Equity Markets written by Philip Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Brown is one of the most admired and respected accounting academics alive today. He was a pioneer in capital markets research in accounting, and his 1968 article, co-authored with Ray Ball, "An Empirical Evaluation of Accounting Income Numbers," arguably had a greater impact on the course of accounting research, directly and indirectly, than any other article during the second half of the twentieth century. Since that time, his innovative research has focused on issues that bridge accounting and finance, including the relationships between net profit reports and the stock market, the long-run performance of acquiring firms, statutory sanctions and voluntary corporate disclosure, and the politics and future of national accounting standards to name a few. This volume brings together the greatest hits of Brown’s career, including several articles that were published in out-of-the-way places, for easier use by students and researchers in the field. With a foreword written by Stephen A. Zeff, and an introduction that discusses the evolution of Brown’s research interests and explains the context for each of the essays included in the volume, this book offers the reader a unique look inside this remarkable 50-year career.
