This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) nature of environmental and operational conditions is still the major cause of marine accidents, with knock-on effects in terms of casualties, property damage, and marine pollution. Recognized as the most effective approach to navigate VUCA environments, risk-based assessment methods provide a solution to address challenges associated with health, safety, and environmental protection in extreme conditions and when accidents involving engineering structures and infrastructure occur. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to the foundational principles, current practices, and cuttingedge trends in quantitative risk assessment and management for ships and offshore structures. With six partsencompassing a total of 35 chapters, it covers risk assessment and management for offshore installations, oil and gas leaks, collisions and grounding, and fires and explosions. Tailored for ship and offshore structural engineers, naval architects, as well as mechanical and civil engineers involved in advanced safety studies, this book is an invaluable resource for both practicing engineers and researchers in this field.• Offers insights into quantitative risk assessment and asset management for ships and offshore structures inextreme conditions and in the event of accidents• Equips engineers with valuable statistical data sets and enhances data assimilation techniques for precisehazard frequency calculations• Seamlessly integrates fundamental principles with practical applications, addressing emerging challengesand leveraging the latest technological advances in the field

This book was released on 2016-11-27 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is was our honor to welcome you to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the twelfth rendition of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management (PSAM) Conference. The planning for PSAM Honolulu began back in 2007 (before PSAM 9 in Hong Kong), when we looked at several locations around the United States, included Arizona, California, Boston, and even considered locations in Oceania. Based upon the feedback both during and after the conference, PSAM 12 proved to be a great success. We would like to thank all of the volunteers, those that served before, during, and after the Conference. Members of the Technical Program Committee, the Organizing Committee, the session chairs, and the presenters have our gratitude for making PSAM 12 the most memorable PSAM yet. This publication represents the technical proceedings for the Conference. Due to the large number of published papers (a total of 391), we have subdivided the technical content (papers) into multiple volumes. On behalf of the International Association for Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Board of Directors, we hope that this publication will provide a valuable technical resource in addition to a reminder of the memorable stay in the Hawaiian Islands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When what you think you know gets in the way—this eye-opening guide offers a clear path to forging stronger, healthier, and more meaningful relationships. We all want positive, productive, and genuine relationships—whether it’s with our family, friends, peers, coworkers, or romantic partners. And yet, time and time again, we all seem to make the same thinking errors that threaten or sabotage these relationships. These errors are called cognitive bias, and they happen when our brain attempts to simplify information by making assumptions. Grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), The Blindspots Between Us reveals the most common “hidden” cognitive biases that blind us to the truth, and which lead to the misunderstandings that damage our relationships. With this guide, you’ll learn key skills to help you debias—to stop, pause, and objectively observe situations before jumping to conclusions about others’ motives. You’ll also learn to consider other people’s points of view and past experiences before rushing to judgment and potentially undermining your relationships. Being a human is hard. None of us are perfect, and we all have our blindspots that can get in the way of building the relationships we really and truly want, deep down. This much-needed book will help you identify your own blindspots, and move beyond them for better relationships—and a better world.

Book Securing Water and Wastewater Systems

Download or read book Securing Water and Wastewater Systems written by Robert M. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban water and wastewater systems have an inherent vulnerability to both manmade and natural threats and disasters including droughts, earthquakes and terrorist attacks. It is well established that natural disasters including major storms, such as hurricanes and flooding, can effect water supply security and integrity. Earthquakes and terrorist attacks have many characteristics in common because they are almost impossible to predict and can cause major devastation and confusion. Terrorism is also a major threat to water security and recent attention has turned to the potential that these attacks have for disrupting urban water supplies. There is a need to introduce the related concept of Integrated Water Resources Management which emphasizes linkages between land-use change and hydrological systems, between ecosystems and human health, and between political and scientific aspects of water management. An expanded water security agenda should include a conceptual focus on vulnerability, risk, and resilience; an emphasis on threats, shocks, and tipping points; and a related emphasis on adaptive management given limited predictability. Internationally, concerns about water have often taken a different focus and there is also a growing awareness, including in the US, that water security should include issues related to quantity, climate change, and biodiversity impacts, in addition to terrorism. This presents contributions from a group of internationally recognized experts that attempt to address the four areas listed above and includes suggestions as to how to deal with related problems. It also addresses the new and potentially growing issue of cyber attacks against water and waste water infrastructure including descriptions of actual attacks, making it of interest to scholars and policy-makers concerned with protecting the water supply.
