Book Scientific Review of the Proposed Risk Assessment Bulletin from the Office of Management and Budget

Download or read book Scientific Review of the Proposed Risk Assessment Bulletin from the Office of Management and Budget written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk assessments are often used by the federal government to estimate the risk the public may face from such things as exposure to a chemical or the potential failure of an engineered structure, and they underlie many regulatory decisions. Last January, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a draft bulletin for all federal agencies, which included a new definition of risk assessment and proposed standards aimed at improving federal risk assessments. This National Research Council report, written at the request of OMB, evaluates the draft bulletin and supports its overall goals of improving the quality of risk assessments. However, the report concludes that the draft bulletin is "fundamentally flawed" from a scientific and technical standpoint and should be withdrawn. Problems include an overly broad definition of risk assessment in conflict with long-established concepts and practices, and an overly narrow definition of adverse health effects-one that considers only clinically apparent effects to be adverse, ignoring other biological changes that could lead to health effects. The report also criticizes the draft bulletin for focusing mainly on human health risk assessments while neglecting assessments of technology and engineered structures.

Download or read book Experts in Uncertainty written by Roger M. Cooke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-10-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extensive survey and critical examination of the literature on the use of expert opinion in scientific inquiry and policy making. The elicitation, representation, and use of expert opinion is increasingly important for two reasons: advancing technology leads to more and more complex decision problems, and technologists are turning in greater numbers to "expert systems" and other similar artifacts of artificial intelligence. Cooke here considers how expert opinion is being used today, how an expert's uncertainty is or should be represented, how people do or should reason with uncertainty, how the quality and usefulness of expert opinion can be assessed, and how the views of several experts might be combined. He argues for the importance of developing practical models with a transparent mathematic foundation for the use of expert opinion in science, and presents three tested models, termed "classical," "Bayesian," and "psychological scaling." Detailed case studies illustrate how they can be applied to a diversity of real problems in engineering and planning.

Book Thermal Hydraulics of Water Cooled Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Thermal Hydraulics of Water Cooled Nuclear Reactors written by Francesco D'Auria and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 1200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Hydraulics of Water-Cooled Nuclear Reactors reviews flow and heat transfer phenomena in nuclear systems and examines the critical contribution of this analysis to nuclear technology development. With a strong focus on system thermal hydraulics (SYS TH), the book provides a detailed, yet approachable, presentation of current approaches to reactor thermal hydraulic analysis, also considering the importance of this discipline for the design and operation of safe and efficient water-cooled and moderated reactors. Part One presents the background to nuclear thermal hydraulics, starting with a historical perspective, defining key terms, and considering thermal hydraulics requirements in nuclear technology. Part Two addresses the principles of thermodynamics and relevant target phenomena in nuclear systems. Next, the book focuses on nuclear thermal hydraulics modeling, covering the key areas of heat transfer and pressure drops, then moving on to an introduction to SYS TH and computational fluid dynamics codes. The final part of the book reviews the application of thermal hydraulics in nuclear technology, with chapters on V&V and uncertainty in SYS TH codes, the BEPU approach, and applications to new reactor design, plant lifetime extension, and accident analysis. This book is a valuable resource for academics, graduate students, and professionals studying the thermal hydraulic analysis of nuclear power plants and using SYS TH to demonstrate their safety and acceptability. - Contains a systematic and comprehensive review of current approaches to the thermal-hydraulic analysis of water-cooled and moderated nuclear reactors - Clearly presents the relationship between system level (top-down analysis) and component level phenomenology (bottom-up analysis) - Provides a strong focus on nuclear system thermal hydraulic (SYS TH) codes - Presents detailed coverage of the applications of thermal-hydraulics to demonstrate the safety and acceptability of nuclear power plants

Book Principles of Random Variate Generation

Download or read book Principles of Random Variate Generation written by John Dagpunar and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date account of the theory and practice of generating random variates from probability distributions is presented in this accessible text. After a brief introduction to simulation, the author discusses the general principles for generating and testing uniform and non-uniform variates. These techniques are applied to univariate and multivariate distributions, Markov processes, and order statistics. Dr. Dagpunar has included Fortran 77 programs for generating the more familiar distributions and a set of graphical aids for the manual generation of variates. Competing methods are also compared and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. In addition, algorithms throughout the book enable readers to generate variates from selected distributions, making this an invaluable guide for statisticians, operational researchers, computer scientists, and postgraduates engaged in computer simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and expanded, this popular text explores the basic methodology of paired comparisons, incorporating recent developments in research by statisticians, psychometricians, mathematicians, and economists. The emphasis continues to be on nonparametric procedures that are widely applicable, and on the analogy between comparisons and tournaments. Design, analysis, and the choice of probability models are fully discussed. The number of bibliographical references has nearly doubled since the book first appeared. This extensive reference work will interest readers from many fields, including statistics, psychometrics, epidemiology, and economics.
