Book excerpt: This collection of 27 travel essays written over the last decade is based on Julie Hills journeys to far-flung destinations of the world. Often welcomed by her hosts not as a customer or a trader but as a confessor and a friend, Julie Hill vindicates their trust and repays their kindness by bringing their stories to life in this book. She goes where most others cannot or would not, emerging with priceless observations and insights on places and lifestyles that may soon vanish in this fast-changing world. One of the great joys of travel is reaching beyond the boundaries of geography, politics, culture, and our own perspective. With Julie, we wander to the edge of the map, where those boundaries blur, such as to the seriously remote, sensationally scenic parts of Bhutan; we examine Myanmars complex history, diversity, and changing society. In Indias Varanasi, Hinduisms most important pilgrimage site, we look at the stirring soul of India from a boat on the sacred Ganges. There is so much to see, do, and fall in love with in Africa, from Ethiopias entrancingly remote regions to Malis mystical Timbuktu, going on safari in Namibia or standing in the spray of the mighty Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. As lush as a dream of green heaven, Papua New Guineas air comes alive with Picasso birds, and its jungles, mountains, and people mesmerize the visitor. Along the Sepik we encounter river dwellers in villages with no name. Here we see man in his environment as it as been for thousands of years, and can almost believe the world was born yesterday. With an intense curiosity about the places she visits and in intelligible, jargon-free prose, Julie Hill examines the delights, wonders, and conflicts of the natural and human world, seeking to rediscover, as Anatole France put it, the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.

But properly stewarded, it can help us see and participate in God's inbreaking kingdom. Scripture repeatedly affirms that privilege is real and declares that, rather than exploiting it for selfish gain or feeling immobilized by it, Christians have a responsibility to leverage it. Subversive Witness asks us to grapple with privilege, indifference, and systemic sin in new ways by using biblical examples to reveal the complex nature of privilege and Christians' responsibility in stewarding it well. Dominique DuBois Gilliard highlights several people in the Bible who understood this kingdom call. Through their stories, you will discover how to leverage privilege to: Resist Sin Stand in Solidarity with the Oppressed Birth Liberation Create Systemic Change Proclaim the Good News Generate Social Transformation By embodying Scripture's subversive call to leverage--and at times forsake--privilege, readers will learn to love their neighbors sacrificially, enact systemic change, and grow more Christlike as citizens of God's kingdom.

He died just weeks after he agreed to sell his bank business to HSBC Holdings, the biggest British banking company, for a record $9.9 billion. A jet-setter with homes in Geneva, Monaco, New York, and Paris, Safra lived in constant fear for his life. As a wealthy Jew, he feared that he was a target for kidnapping and Arab terrorists” according to his friend and former Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. Tragically he met his end in a bizarre blaze that swept through La Belle Epoque, his luxury Monaco penthouse, in the early hours of December 9th, 1999. International media quickly speculated that his death was the direct result of the Russian mafia, Muslim fundamentalists, or other militants. For the first time Safra's nurse and former Green Beret Ted Maher breaks his silence about what really happened that fateful morning. This book offers an insider's look into Edmond Safra's last days, answering long speculated upon questions in this fascinating, tragic story.

Book The Idea of a Catholic University

Download or read book The Idea of a Catholic University written by Dennis O'Brien and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-04-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw thought that a Catholic university was a contradiction in terms—"university" represents intellectual freedom and "Catholic" represents dogmatic belief. Scholars, university administrators, and even the Vatican have staked out positions debating Shaw's observation. In this refreshing book, George Dennis O'Brien argues that contradiction arises both from the secular university's limited concept of academic freedom and the church's defective notion of dogma. Truth is a central concept for both university and church, and O'Brien's book is built on the idea that there are different areas of truth—scientific, artistic, and religious—each with its own proper warrant and "method." In this light, he argues that one can reverse Shaw's comparison and uncover academic dogma and Christian freedom, university "infallibility" and dogmatic "fallibility." Drawing on theology and the history of philosophy, O'Brien shows how religious truth relates to the work of a Catholic university. He then turns to the current controversies over Pope John Paul II's recent statement, Ex Corde Ecclesiae, which seeks to make Catholic universities conform to the church's official teaching office. O'Brien rejects the conventional "institutional-juridical" model used by the Vatican as improper both to faith and academic freedom. He argues for a "sacramental" model, one that respects the different kinds of "truth"—thus preserving the integrity of both church and university while making their combination in a Catholic university not only possible but desirable. O'Brien concludes with a practical consideration of how the ideal Catholic university might be expressed in the actual life of the contemporary curriculum and extracurriculum. For anyone concerned about the place of religion in higher education, The Idea of a Catholic University will be essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for In Chambers: "This new collection of essays, including some by former clerks, takes readers inside justices' chambers for a look at clerkship life.... [T]he best parts of the book are the behind-the-scenes descriptions of life at the court."-- Associated Press "An excellent book... It's interesting for many different reasons, not the least of which as a reminder of how much of a bastion of elitism the Court has always been."-- Atlantic Monthly In his earlier books, In Chambers and Of Courtiers and Kings, Todd C. Peppers provided an insider's view of the Supreme Court from the perspective of the clerks who worked closely with some of its most important justices. With Of Courtiers and Princes, he concludes the trilogy by examining the understudied yet equally fascinating role of lower court clerks--encompassing pioneering women and minorities. Drawing on contributions from former law clerks and judicial scholars--including an essay by Ruth Bader Ginsburg--the book provides an inside look at the professional and personal bonds that form between lower court judges and their clerks. While the individual essays often focus on a single judge and his or her corps of law clerks, including their selection process, contributions, and even influence, the book as a whole provides a macro-level view of the law clerk's role in the rapidly changing world of lower federal and state courts, thereby offering an unusual yet crucial perspective on the inner workings of our judicial system.
