Book Reforming Infrastructure

Download or read book Reforming Infrastructure written by Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, railways, and water supply, are often vertically and horizontally integrated state monopolies. This results in weak services, especially in developing and transition economies, and for poor people. Common problems include low productivity, high costs, bad quality, insufficient revenue, and investment shortfalls. Many countries over the past two decades have restructured, privatized and regulated their infrastructure. This report identifies the challenges involved in this massive policy redirection. It also assesses the outcomes of these changes, as well as their distributional consequences for poor households and other disadvantaged groups. It recommends directions for future reforms and research to improve infrastructure performance, identifying pricing policies that strike a balance between economic efficiency and social equity, suggesting rules governing access to bottleneck infrastructure facilities, and proposing ways to increase poor people's access to these crucial services.

Book Privatization Deregulation and Capital Accumulation

Download or read book Privatization Deregulation and Capital Accumulation written by Fabio Mendez and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we study how privatization and deregulation of production of intermediate goods influence capital accumulation. Our model is solved under three alternative scenarios: one where the intermediate sector is composed of a public monopoly under government control, one where the intermediate sector is dominated by a private monopoly, and one with a competitive intermediate sector. The comparison of these models suggests that the income benefits of state-to-market transitions are mostly due to increased competition on the deregulated market and that the privatization of state enterprises is not likely to generate significant changes in the economy when the public monopoly is replaced by a private monopoly. In fact, the model predicts that for high enough levels of public investment, a public monopoly would be preferred to a private monopoly in terms of the resulting aggregate income level. We find that elimination of monopoly rights can increase aggregate income by more than 20%.

Book Evolving Bargain Strategic Implications Of Deregulation And Privatization

Download or read book Evolving Bargain Strategic Implications Of Deregulation And Privatization written by William Emmons III and published by . This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, deregulation and privatization have swept the globe, opening up a wide range of markets to private investment and heightened competition. But while the government's role in these sectors has diminished, it has not disappeared-a critical factor companies must consider as they seek to exploit burgeoning opportunities in these markets. The Evolving Bargain provides the first in-depth look at the impact of deregulation and privatization on managers' strategic agendas in industries around the world. Emmons emphasizes that these reforms are not one-time events, but dynamic processes that shape the ongoing relationship, or bargain, between governments and affected enterprises. He also shows how the contexts of both industry and country influence a firm's strategic options and performance outcomes within its evolving bargain. Based on extensive research and interviews with over 150 industry executives, investors, and government officials worldwide, this book offers a practical framework for understanding the challenges and potential rewards for established and new ventures alike. Drawing upon rich examples from North and South America, Europe, and Asia, Emmons details how winners and losers emerge, and distills key lessons managers can apply as they prepare their own companies for competition in this new environment The first book to examine this timely issue through a managerial lens, The Evolving Bargain is an essential guide for companies looking to conquer the complexities, and harness the opportunities, of the new market economy. Willis Emmons is currently an Associate Professor at Georgetown University, McDonough School of Business. A member of the Harvard Business School faculty for over a decade, Emmons also consults to a wide range of private and public sector organizations.
