Book The Official History of Privatisation Vol I

Download or read book The Official History of Privatisation Vol I written by David Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of the Official History studies the background to privatisation, and the privatisations of the first two Conservative Governments led by Margaret Thatcher from May 1979 to June 1987. First commissioned by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair as an authoritative history, this volume addresses a number of key questions: To what extent was privatisation a clear policy commitment within the Thatcher Governments of the 1980s - or did Government simply stumble on the idea? Why were particular public corporations sold early in the 1980s and other sales delayed until well into the 1990s? What were the privatisation objectives and how did they change over time, if at all? How was each privatisation planned and executed, how were different City advisers appointed and remunerated, what precise roles did they play? How was each privatisation administered; in what ways did the methods evolve and change and why? How were sale prices determined? Which government departments took the lead role; what was the input of the Treasury and Bank of England; and what was the relationship between Ministers and civil servants? The study draws heavily from the official records of the British Government to which the author was given full access and from interviews with leading figures involved in each of the privatisations – including ex-Ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This new official history will be of much interest to students of British political history, economics and business studies.

Book Privatization and Privilege in Education RLE Edu L

Download or read book Privatization and Privilege in Education RLE Edu L written by Geoffrey Walford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can privilege be bought? Arguments have raged over whether private education in the UK is ‘the cement in the wall’ dividing British society, or whether parental choice is, as has also been argued ‘a key component of a free society’. The author here describes the traditional private sector schools, paying attention to the ways in which parents can purchase privilege for their children through attendance at such schools. He argues that the privatized system is kept under tight control if a growth in social and educational inequality and a deepening of social class and ethnic group division is to be avoided. The book is unique in combining an account of private schools in Britain with an examination of the process of privatization.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This volume discusses the impact of the transfer of undertakings regime upon the public sector, particularly focusing on the interaction between the protection of employee rights and the restructuring and modernization of public services. The crux of the book is the interaction of market-led policies in the public sector, such as compulsory competitive tendering, best value and the PFI, with the protection of employee rights on the transfer of imployment. It considers the evolving law on the scope of a relevant transfer under the European Acquired Rights Directive and the TUPE regulations, before reviewing the present stte of the law on dismissals, variation of terms, pensions and employee consultation in transfer-related situations. Book Privatization and Employment Relations

Download or read book Privatization and Employment Relations written by Julia O'Connell Davidson and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1993 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book shows how work organization and employment relations in one of Britain's newly privatized water companies (here referred to by the fictional name of 'Albion Water'), and in one of the firms of contractors it employs, were rapidly and radically transformed in preparation for, and subsequent to, privatization." "After providing a historical overview of the development of the water industry in Britain and examining employment relations in 'Albion Water' during the 1980s, the author explains the management's rationale for change and shows how the new work structure reflects its imposition in a political climate that was especially unfavourable to labour. The employees who remain at 'Albion' now find themselves working harder and longer, often under worse conditions for less money." "This book challenges the widely accepted view that employment relations are determined primarily by the nature of work tasks. In the case of 'Albion Water', changes to employment relations cannot be explained without reference to the wider economic and political context in which they were instituted."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Privatisation in Developing Countries

Download or read book Privatisation in Developing Countries written by Paul Cook and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades of the 20th century, privatization has been a key policy instrument in the move to more market-based economic systems in all parts of the developing world. Privatization, however, has not necessarily been accompanied by an increase in market competition. Many public utilities have been privatized as monopolies and in addition regulatory systems have been developed to restrict their market power and protect the interests of consumers. This volume brings together a collection of papers that provide theoretical and empirical insights into privatization and regulation, as well as policy perspectives in relation to developing countries.
