Book The Making of a Professional

Download or read book The Making of a Professional written by Henry Phillips and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2000-03-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the life of General Manton S. Eddy, this study details his experiences in World War II as leader of the U.S. 9th Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily and France, and subsequently, as commander of XII Corps, into the heart of Germany. While much has been written about the top military leaders of this era, there is little information about corps commanders whose missions were limited to doing battle and whose organizations were tailored exclusively for this task. Eddy's career provides a model for the Army's most ambitious officers, particularly those who, like Eddy, faced the challenge without family connections or the traditional West Point education. He devoted his life to the U.S. Army, enhancing his innate talents through the incorporation of a daily program of self-education. Eddy had an excellent grasp of the basic principles of military tactics and strategy. He attained this art through home study and assiduous application at the Army's professional education institutions, in particular at the Command and General Staff College, where he served as an instructor for four years. He focused on people, quickly learning and applying basic skills to draw out their best efforts. He came to know what to expect from them in the chaos and under the pressure of combat. This facilitated his development of strong, mission-oriented subordinates. His personal goal was always to maximize all available power at the correct point for crushing his nation's enemies, and to this end, he was extraordinarily successful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the advice of his former teacher and mentor, Adolf von Harnack, William Wrede committed himself to the task of writing a dissertation on 1 Clement, which was originally published under the title Untersuchungen zum 1. Clemensbrief and has now been published here in English translation for the first time under the title Studies on 1 Clement. In this volume, Wrede investigates the ecclesiastical structure of the early church as well as the significance and function of the Old Testament in 1 Clement. Though overshadowed by his later work, The Messianic Secret, Wrede’s work on 1 Clement served as a tempered and solid basis for later investigations of the letter, even when those investigations part ways with Wrede’s conclusions.

Book Erin Brockovich and the Beverly Hills Greenscam

Download or read book Erin Brockovich and the Beverly Hills Greenscam written by Norma Zager and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An engaging wonderful story about how the powerful, rich, and famous can be brought down by an honest journalist determined to report the truth." -Honorable Mark Egerman, former mayor, Beverly Hills "Gutsy, inspiring reporting. Journalism schools everywhere should make Erin Brockovich and the Beverly Hills Greenscam required reading." -John H. Sullivan, president, Civil Justice Association of California "Zager may have been the most important element in the entire investigation . . . and that was establishing the confidence from the community that she would find the truth and report it." -Barry Brucker, former school board president and mayor, Beverly Hills This is a provocative account of Erin Brockovich's battle against the city and schools of Beverly Hills and various oil companies. When the high profile lawyer claimed oil wells were the cause of cancer in former students and community members, Norma Zager launched an investigation to prove her wrong. The journalist details the events that unfolded as a result and recalls the personal struggles of the community caught in the middle of the commotion. Zager's story serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the significance of checks and balances to ensure safety. In addition to providing the guidelines necessary to protect citizens, this handbook is helpful for anyone concerned about maintaining good health and a clean environment.
