Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses current trends in prison drug use, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and HCV in prisoner populations and other information relevant to assessing the need for prison-based needle exchange programs in Canada. The first part presents background information on (1) the role of injection drug use (IDU) in the HIV and HCV epidemics, (2) prevalence of substance users and levels of substance use in Canadian prisons, (3) levels and patterns of injection drug use and needle sharing in Canadian prisons, (4) the prevalence of HIV and hepatitis C infections among Canadian prisoners, (5) evidence of cases of disease transfer from sharing needles in prisons, and (6) existing harm reduction policies and programs in provincial and federal correctional systems in Canada. The next section reviews international experience with prison-based needle exchange programs, emphasizing evaluations of their effects on behaviour and their effectiveness in reducing harms among prisoners who use drugs by injection. The third part provides a review of the legal/constitutional and moral/ethical rationales for providing sterile needles to prisoners and a brief summary of the previous calls for piloting prison-based needle exchange programs in Canada. The last part discusses several possible courses of action available to the Canadian government as it considers its options on prison-based needle exchange programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the experience of many countries in the WHO European Region and the advice of experts, this guide outlines some of the steps prison systems should take to reduce the public health risks from compulsory detention in often unhealthy situations, to care for prisoners in need and to promote the health of prisoners and prison staff. This requires that everyone working in prisons understand how imprisonment affects health, what prisoners' health needs are, and how evidence-based health services can be provided for everyone needing treatment, care and prevention in prison. Other essential elements are being aware of and accepting internationally recommended standards for prison health; providing professional care with the same adherence to professional ethics as in other health services; and, while seeing individual needs as the central feature of the care provided, promoting a whole-prison approach to care and promoting the health and well-being of people in custody.

Book The Big Fix

Download or read book The Big Fix written by Tracey Helton Mitchell and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After surviving nearly a decade of heroin abuse and hard living on the streets of San Francisco's Tenderloin District, Tracey Helton Mitchell decided to get clean for good. With raw honesty and a poignant perspective on life that only comes from starting at rock bottom, The Big Fix tells her story of transformation from homeless heroin addict to stable mother of three—and the hard work and hard lessons that got her there. Rather than dwelling on the pain of addiction, Tracey focuses on her journey of recovery and rebuilding her life, while exposing the failings of the American rehab system and laying out a path for change. Starting with the first step in her recovery, Tracey re-learns how to interact with men, build new friendships, handle money, and rekindle her relationship with her mother, all while staying sober, sharp, and dedicated to her future. A decidedly female story of addiction, The Big Fix describes the unique challenges faced by women caught in the grip of substance abuse, such as the toxic connection between drug addition and prostitution. Tracey's story of hope, hard work, and rehabilitation will inspire anyone who has been affected by substance abuse while offering hope for a better future.

Book Harm Reduction in European Prisons

Download or read book Harm Reduction in European Prisons written by Heino Stöver and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key aim of this research was to provide an overview of the legislation, policy and practice concerning harm reduction services provided for problematic drug users (PDUs) in 9 European Union (EU) countries. To achieve this, the main objectives were to analyse international, national policies on harm reduction; to explore how harm reduction in conceptualised in different cultural contexts; to identify existing harm reduction initiatives in prisons; to identify the obstacles and barriers that need to be to overcome in order to implement harm reduction measures in prisons; to examine in detail the policies and harm reduction services in place in two sample institutions; to identify models of best practice and promote awareness of the harm reduction initiatives operating in the area of problematic drug users in custody, and finally to present examples of harm reduction measures in prisons from each of the sample countries. Key requirements needed in order to successfully implement sustainable harm reduction services in prisons are identified. These requirements can be formulated on all relevant levels: attitude towards and knowledge about harm reduction, drug addiction and health risks for all key actors, necessary changes both on the policy and practice level. Guidelines are formulated from evidence-based practice, as opposed to moral and value judgements. engl.
