Lors de son exercice, le chirurgien-dentiste est confronté aux conséquences directes de l'alcoolo-dépendance dans la bouche de ses patients. C'est une pathologie qui nuit à l'ensemble de la cavité buccale, et plus particulièrement au parodonte. Elle est un facteur déclenchant et aggravant de parodontopathies. Pour un traitement efficace de la maladie parodontale, le chirurgien-dentiste doit s'inscrire dans une prise en charge globale de l'alcoolo-dépendance et créer une relation de confiance avec son patient. Il peut ensuite recourir à différents protocoles de soins qui seront plus ou moins adaptés chez le patient alcoolo-dépendant.

Véritable poison pour l'organisme, l'alcool présente aussi de nombreuses répercussions bucco-dentaires par contact prolongé : caries, parodontopathies, cancers de la bouche. Par la perturbation de la flore bactérienne de la cavité buccale, la consommation quotidienne d'alcool constitue un des facteurs de risques de la parodontite. La maîtrise de ces facteurs de risque étant un prérequis essentiel à la bonne prise en charge de la maladie parodontale, il apparait nécessaire d'encourager les patients souffrant d'éthylisme chronique à surmonter leur addiction. La dépendance à l'alcool étant bien souvent le reflet de troubles psychologiques sous-jacents, le patient seul ne peut que rarement s'en défaire. Le chirurgien-dentiste occupe donc une place de choix pour accompagner ces patients vers un sevrage, notamment dans le cadre d'une thérapeutique parodontale, par la mise en place d'un suivi régulier. Cette thèse a ainsi pour but de proposer au chirurgien-dentiste des solutions d'accompagnement pour ces patients et de l'aider à intégrer le sevrage éthylique dans ses plans de traitement.
