Book Current Issues of Water Management

Download or read book Current Issues of Water Management written by Uli Uhlig and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an estimated 1.4 billion km3 of water in the world but only approximately three percent (39 million km3) of it is available as fresh water. Moreover, most of this fresh water is found as ice in the arctic regions, deep groundwater or atmospheric water. Since water is the source of life and essential for all life on the planet, the use of this resource is a highly important issue. "Water management" is the general term used to describe all the activities that manage the optimum use of the world's water resources. However, only a few percent of the fresh water available can be subjected to water management. It is still an enormous amount, but what's unique about water is that unlike other resources, it is irreplaceable. This book provides a general overview of various topics within water management from all over the world. The topics range from politics, current models for water resource management of rivers and reservoirs to issues related to agriculture. Water quality problems, the development of water demand and water pricing are also addressed. The collection of contributions from outstanding scientists and experts provides detailed information about different topics and gives a general overview of the current issues in water management. The book covers a wide range of current issues, reflecting on current problems and demonstrating the complexity of water management.

Book Modeling Control and Optimization of Water Systems

Download or read book Modeling Control and Optimization of Water Systems written by Thomas Rauschenbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides essential background knowledge on the development of model-based real-world solutions in the field of control and decision making for water systems. It presents system engineering methods for modelling surface water and groundwater resources as well as water transportation systems (rivers, channels and pipelines). The models in turn provide information on both the water quantity (flow rates, water levels) of surface water and groundwater and on water quality. In addition, methods for modelling and predicting water demand are described. Sample applications of the models are presented, such as a water allocation decision support system for semi-arid regions, a multiple-criteria control model for run-of-river hydropower plants, and a supply network simulation for public services.

Book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1

Download or read book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1 written by S. Ohgaki and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has undergone rapid commercial and industrial development over the past half century, which continues to bring economic stability and prosperity to its inhabitants. The combined impacts of population growth, urbanization, and industrialization continue to put pressure on the natural resources and the environment. At the same time, globalization is another momentous challenge for the region. Southeast Asian megacities are some of the most dynamic and diverse regions, which are playing a key role in achieving global sustainability. Twelve out of nineteen megacities of the world are located in the region, where highly developed areas coexist with poorly developing areas where large economic growth is expected. The poor quality of the living standards of the latter creates many environmental problems that are major threats to the inhabitants of the region. The Southeast Asian environment has been degraded by the release of industrial and domestic wastes, agricultural and aquacultural chemicals, and pollutants from automobiles. It suffers from water-related disasters, Tsunami, floods, typhoons, etc. In order to deal with these issues an integrated approach from the inhibitants, governments and researchers is essential. The environmental threats arising from the increasing population, overuse of natural resources, industrialization, urbanization, and natural disasters present ever increasing challenges to pursuing sustainable development of the region. Many developed countries such as Japan have experiences of dealing with severe environmental pollution and this publication is the result of building an academic network among researchers of related fields from different regions to exchange information. This book will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with achieving global sustainability within the water environment in developing regions, including researchers, policy makers, NGOs and NPOs.

Book Hydrosystems Engineering and Management

Download or read book Hydrosystems Engineering and Management written by Larry W. Mays and published by Water Resources Publication. This book was released on 2002 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a textbook for students of water resources engineering and management. It is an introduction to methods used in hydrosystems for upper level undergraduate and graduate students. The material can be presented to students with no background in operations research and with only an undergraduate background in hydrology and hydraulics. A major focus is to bring together the use of economics, operations research, probability and statistics with the use of hydrology, hydraulics, and water resources for the analysis, design, operation, and management of various types of water projects. This book is an excellent reference for engineers, water resource planners, water resource systems analysts, and water managers. This book is concerned with the mathematical modeling of problems in water project design, analysis, operation, and management. The quantitative methods include: (a) the simulation of various hydrologic and hydraulic processes; (b) the use of operations research, probability and statistics, and economics. Rarely have these methods been integrated in a systematic framework in a single book like Hydrosystems Engineering and Management. An extensive number of example problems are presented for ease in understanding the material. In addition, a large number of end-of-chapter problems are provided for use in homework assignments.
