Book excerpt: Driven by the massive growth in communications data traffic as well as flourishing users' demands, we need to fully utilize the existing scarce spectrum resource. However, there have been several studies and reports over the years showing that a large portion of licensed spectrum is actually underutilized in both temporal and spatial domains. Moreover, aiming at facing the dilemma among the fixed spectrum allocation, the ever enormous increasing traffic demand and the limited spectrum resource, cognitive radio (CR) was proposed by Mitola to alleviate the under usage of spectrum. Thus, cognitive radio networking (CRN) has emerged as a promising paradigm to improve the spectrum efficiency and utilization by allowing secondary users (SUs) to utilize the spectrum hole of primary users (PUs). By using spectrum sensing, SUs can opportunistically access spectrum holes for secondary transmission without interfering the transmissions of the PUs and efficient spectrum utilization by multiple PUs and SUs requires reliable detection of PUs. Nevertheless, sensing errors such as false alarm and misdetection are inevitable in practical networks. Hence, the assumption that SUs always obtain the exact channel availability information is unreasonable. In addition, spectrum sensing must be carried out continuously and the SU must terminate its transmission as soon as it senses the re-occupancy by a PU. As a better alternative of spectrum sensing, cooperation has been leveraged in CRN, which is referred as cooperative cognitive radio networking (CCRN). In CCRN, in order to obtain the transmission opportunities, SUs negotiate with the PUs for accessing the spectrum by providing tangible service for PUs. In this thesis, we study cluster based spectrum sharing mechanism for CCRN and investigate on exploiting the cooperative technique in heterogeneous network. First, we develop cooperation protocols for CRN. Simultaneous transmission can be realized through quadrature signalling method in our proposed cooperation protocol. The optimal power allocation has been analyzed and closed-form solution has been derived for amplify and forward mode. Second, we study a cluster based spectrum sharing mechanism. The spectrum sharing is formulated as a combinatorial non-linear optimization problem which is NP-hard. Afterwards, we solve this problem by decomposing it into cluster allocation and time assignment, and we show that the result is close to the optimal solution. Third, we propose a macrocell-femtocell network cooperation scheme for heterogeneous networks under closed access mode. The cooperation between the femtocell network and macrocell network is investigated. By implementing the cooperation, not only the macrocell users' (MUEs') and femtocell users' (FUEs') utility can be improved compared with the non-cooperation case, but also the energy consumption as well as the interference from the femtocell network to the macrocell network can be reduced.

As the cooperation among the secondary users increases the detection performance increases, which increases the average channel throughput and energy efficiency but it depends on the number of cooperative secondary users, fusion rules, channel conditions and detection threshold. In this thesis average channel throughput, energy consumption and energy efficiency are estimated for variable number of secondary users and detection thresholds using hard fusion rules i.e. AND, OR and MAJORITY fusion rules. From the results it has been observed that the performance of AND fusion rule is better at low detection thresholds and for less number of secondary users. The performance of OR fusion rule is better at high detection thresholds and for large number of secondary users. The performance of MAJORITY fusion rule follows the performance of AND fusion rule at low detection thresholds and it follows the performance of OR fusion rule at high detection thresholds. However as the number of cooperative secondary users increases the energy required for spectrum sensing and reporting sensing results to the fusion center increases, which increases the energy consumption and reduces the energy efficiency. Therefore energy efficiency can be improved by maximizing the average channel throughput or by minimizing the energy consumption. To minimize the energy consumption in cooperative spectrum sensing, optimization technique has been proposed in this thesis and it is used for further improvement of energy efficiency. With this optimization technique, optimal number of cooperative secondary users are derived by maximizing the energy efficiency using AND and OR fusion rules but not with MAJORITY fusion rule. Because it is very difficult to estimate the optimal number of cooperative secondary users using MAJORITY fusion rule, so optimization of final decision threshold was proposed in the existing methods to maximize the energy efficiency using MAJORITY fusion rule. Therefore AND and OR fusion rules are used in this work to optimize the number of cooperative secondary users.

The results demonstrate the secondary performance is significantly improved by limited feedback and is further improved by more feedback bits, more secondary receivers and more primary side information.

Book excerpt: In a cognitive radio network (CRN), bands of a spectrum are shared by licensed (primary) and unlicensed (secondary) users in that preferential order. It is generally recognized that the spectral occupancy by primary users exhibit dynamical spatial and temporal properties. In the open literature, there exist no accurate time-varying model representing the spectrum occupancy that the wireless researchers could employ for evaluating new algorithms and techniques designed for dynamic spectrum access (DSA). We use statistical characteristics from actual radio frequency measurements, obtain first- and second-order parameters, and define a statistical spectrum occupancy model based on a combination of several different probability density functions (PDFs). One of the fundamental issues in analyzing spectrum occupancy is to characterize it in terms of probabilities and study probabilistic distributions over the spectrum. To reduce computational complexity of the exact distribution of total number of free bands, we resort to efficient approximation techniques. Furthermore, we characterize free bands into five different types based on the occupancy of its adjacent bands. The probability distribution of total number of each type of bands is therefore determined. Two corresponding algorithms are effectively developed to compute the distributions, and our extensive simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed analytical model. Design of an efficient spectrum sensing scheme is a challenging task, especially when false alarms and misdetections are present. The status of the band is to be monitored over a number of consecutive time periods, with each time period being of a specific time interval. The status of the sub-band at any time point is either free or busy. We proved that the status of the band over time evolves randomly, following a Markov chain. The cognitive radio assesses the band, whether or not it is free, and the assessment is prone to errors. The errors are modeled probabilistically and the entire edifice is brought under a hidden Markov chain model in predicting the true status of the band. After spectrum sensing, our research direction is on spectrum sharing using cooperative communication. We discuss allocation strategies of unused bands among the cognitive users. We introduce a cooperative N-person Game among the N cognitive users in a CRN and then identify strategies that help achieve Nash equilibrium. When licensed users arrive in any of those sub-bands involved in unlicensed user communication, the affected cognitive users in those bands remove them out of the N-person game and assess their optional strategies with the licensed users using the 2-person game approach for coexistence with the licensed users. In the sequel of spectrum sharing, we present three novel priority-based spectrum allocation techniques for enabling dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks employing non-contiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) transmission. The allocation of bandwidth to unlicensed users, without significantly increasing the interference on the existing licensed users, is a challenge for Ultra Wideband (UWB) networks. We propose a novel Rake Optimization and Power Aware Scheduling (ROPAS) architecture for UWB networks as multipath diversity in UWB communication encourages us to use a Rake receiver.
