Book Strong Women Beautiful Men

Download or read book Strong Women Beautiful Men written by Laura J. Mueller and published by Brill Hotei. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shin-hanga, literally meaning 'new prints', was the name given to a Japanese print artists' movement in the early years of the twentieth century. It sought to revive the traditional style of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603-1868). The connection between shin-hanga and the Toledo Museum of Art began when Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the leaders of the movement, and his artist wife met J. Arthur MacLean and Dorothy Blair, at that time connected to the John Herron Art Museum in Indianapolis. When Mr. MacLean and Miss Blair established Toledo's Asian Art Department in 1927-28, they decided to collaborate with their friends the Yoshidas on two exhibitions of modern Japanese prints, which took place in 1930 and 1936. This book accompanies the Museum's exhibition, Strong Women, Beautiful Men, which explores the concept of the human form in Japanese woodblock prints. Many of the works in the extensive Toledo collection deal with the genre of popular figures, such as Kabuki actors in famous roles and bijin-ga, images of beautiful women.

This book examines the fascination with wakashu in Edo-period culture. The book reproduces over a hundred works, mostly woodblock prints and illustrated books from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book is based on the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum, which houses the largest collection of Japanese art in Canada, including more than 2,500 woodblock prints.

Book Canadian Women in Print 1750 1918

Download or read book Canadian Women in Print 1750 1918 written by Carole Gerson and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Women in Print, 1750—1918 is the first historical examination of women’s engagement with multiple aspects of print over some two hundred years, from the settlers who wrote diaries and letters to the New Women who argued for ballots and equal rights. Considering women’s published writing as an intervention in the public sphere of national and material print culture, this book uses approaches from book history to address the working and living conditions of women who wrote in many genres and for many reasons. This study situates English Canadian authors within an extensive framework that includes francophone writers as well as women’s work as compositors, bookbinders, and interveners in public access to print. Literary authorship is shown to be one point on a spectrum that ranges from missionary writing, temperance advocacy, and educational texts to journalism and travel accounts by New Woman adventurers. Familiar figures such as Susanna Moodie, L.M. Montgomery, Nellie McClung, Pauline Johnson, and Sara Jeannette Duncan are contextualized by writers whose names are less well known (such as Madge Macbeth and Agnes Laut) and by many others whose writings and biographies have vanished into the recesses of history. Readers will learn of the surprising range of writing and publishing performed by early Canadian women under various ideological, biographical, and cultural motivations and circumstances. Some expressed reluctance while others eagerly sought literary careers. Together they did much more to shape Canada’s cultural history than has heretofore been recognized.

Book The Beauty Quotient Formula Large Print 16pt

Download or read book The Beauty Quotient Formula Large Print 16pt written by Robert M. Tornambe and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-01-23 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their gorgeous faces stare out at us from the glossy pages of magazines or appear larger-than-life on movie screens. With role models such as these, it's easy to find yourself wanting. During his 25-year career as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert M. Tornambe has worked with thousands of women and spent countless hours contemplating the nature of beauty - particularly in situations where he was asked to perform a procedure he believed would diminish his patient's natural good looks. In an attempt to provide as many options as possible, he focused on helping women understand that while surgery has its place, it isn't the only roadmap to looking and feeling great. This focus led Dr. Tornambe to devise The Beauty Quotient Formula - a much more useful way to look at beauty. While physical traits do play a role in beauty, Dr. Tornambe shows us that what makes any woman truly attractive is based largely on confidence, charisma, personality, and a solid beauty routine - and that more often than not, going under the knife isn't necessary. The Beauty Quotient Formula begins with a detailed quiz that helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses so you can work to enhance your intrinsic good qualities. Your answers to the quiz will point you toward specific parts of Dr. Tornambe's unique beauty regimen covering everything from firming your body, to improving your skin, to dealing with social anxiety, to perfecting your unique style.
