This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated language arts approach to literacy development that brings early childhood perspectives on how children learn in pre-kindergarten though grade three, together with explicit teaching of literacy skills and strategies teachers need to make it all work. Pre-service and in-service teachers get a wealth of valuable information for making children active participants in the process of literacy development with this integrated approach to language arts. The book encourages teaching reading, writing, listening, thinking, and viewing at the same time, using each skill to develop the others, and discusses both constructivist problem-solving teaching and more explicit systematic instruction. Through both theoretical and research-based rationales, plus extensive practical applications, renowned author Lesley Mandel Morrow presents literacy development as an active process between children and adults to create meaning and real purpose–and helps pre- and in-service teachers grasp the scope and complexity of early literacy development. This comprehensive, balanced approach to literacy teaching and learning covers oral language development, word study, phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, listening and writing. The reader is provided with a complete picture of early literacy development.

Book Cultivating Visual and Print Literacy with Picture Books

Download or read book Cultivating Visual and Print Literacy with Picture Books written by Catherine Read and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picture books are one of the most popular forms of books among young children. They provide hours of enjoyment, excitement, anticipation and relaxation through the stories and images readily available to young, soon-to-be readers. The artworks in picture books can provide a very rich experience to young students that are beneficial onmultiple dimensions. As students learn to question, scrutinize, decode symbols, problem-solve, and communicate their ideas, they engage in both visual and print literacy practice. This thesis focuses primarily on visual literacy as it relates to print literacy development. I will argue that as students practice visual literacy they also develop a basis for print literacy and build a solid foundation for further reading development. The development of visual literacy cannot be quantified, nor can one remove all visual aspects from one's life in order to scientifically study its effects. Therefore, because of the nature of visual literacy, this paper focuses on the overlapping relationships that exist between visual literacy and print literacy development. Many of the overlaps include processes that are challenging to pinpoint and define such as knowledge, understanding and language. This results in a philosophical and theoretical discussion concerning the development of a literacy foundation based on communication, comprehension, coding, motivation, experience, reading strategies and transfer. This paper concludes with a critical analysis of current approaches to teaching visual literacy as it relates to print literacy development in today's classrooms. Strategies for teachers are provided, from choosing picture books and illustrations, to structuring the discussions and engaging the students. A suggested approach is also provided, along with a sample plan and discussion questions for teachers of primary students to use and adapt to suit their own classroom needs.

The latest edition continues to prepare teachers to create and implement literacy-rich curricula in early childhood classrooms, while providing updates to federal legislation and highlighting the impact of state standards on educational settings. Recent technology is integrated into activities used to enhance literacy competencies. Book Literacy Development and Enhancement Across Orthographies and Cultures

Download or read book Literacy Development and Enhancement Across Orthographies and Cultures written by Dorit Aram and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One key measure of a country’s status in the world is the literacy of its people; at the same time, global migration has led to increased interest in bilingualism and foreign language learning as topics of research. Literacy Development and Enhancement Across Orthographies and Cultures reviews international studies of the role of literacy in child development, particularly how children learn their first written language and acquire a second written and spoken one. Comparisons and contrasts are analyzed across eight countries and 11 languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Hebrew, Dutch, and Catalan. Using qualitative and quantitative, established and experimental methods, contributors trace toddlers’ development of print awareness, clear up common myths regarding parental involvement and non-involvement in their children’s literacy, and suggest how the spelling of words can aid in the gaining of vocabulary. For added relevance to educators, the book includes chapters on early intervention for reading problems and the impact of pedagogical science on teaching literacy. Highlights of the coverage: Letter name knowledge in early spelling development Early informal literacy experiences Environmental factors promoting literacy at home Reading books to young children: what it does—and doesn’t do The role of orthography in literacy acquisition among monolingual and bilingual children Gaining literacy in a foreign language Instructional influences on literacy growth Literacy Development and Enhancement Across Orthographies and Cultures adds significant depth and interest to the knowledge base and should inspire contributions from additional languages and orthographies. It belongs in the libraries of researchers and educators involved in cognitive psychology, language education, early childhood education and linguistics.
