  • Author : Sylvia Heudecker

Download or read book Collecting Prints and Drawings written by Sylvia Heudecker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cabinets of prints and drawings are found in the earliest art collections of Early Modern Europe. From the sixteenth century onwards, some of them acquired such fame that the necessity for an ordered and scientific display meant that a dedicated keeper was occasionally employed to ensure that fellow enthusiasts, as well as visiting diplomats, courtiers and artists, might have access to the print room. Often collected and displayed together with drawings, the prints formed a substantial part of princely collections which sometimes achieved astounding longevity as a specialised group of collectibles, such as the Florentine Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe at the Uffizi (GDSU). Prints and drawings, both bought and commissioned, were collected by princes and by private amateurs. Like the rest of their collections, the prints and drawings were usually preserved and displayed as part of, or near, the owner’s library in close proximity to scientific instruments, cut gems or small sculptural works of art. Both prints and drawings not only documented an encyclopaedic approach to the knowledge available at the time, but also depicted parts of the collections in the form of a paper museum. Prints and drawings also served as a guide to the collections. They spread their fame, and the renown of their owners, across Europe and into new worlds of collecting, both East and West. This volume explores issues such as: when, how and why did cabinets of prints and drawings become a specialised part of princely and private collections? How important were collections of prints and drawings for the self-representation of a prince or connoisseur among specialists and social peers? Is the presentation of a picture hanging in a gallery, for example by Charles Eisen for the Royal Galleries at Dresden, to be treated as documentary evidence? Are there notable differences in the approach to collecting, presentation and preservation of prints and drawings in diverse parts of the world? What was the afterlife of such collections up to the present day?

Book Collecting Prints Posters and Ephemera

Download or read book Collecting Prints Posters and Ephemera written by Ruth E. Iskin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did collectors seek out posters and collect ephemera during the late-nineteenth and the twentieth centuries? How have such materials been integrated into institutional collections today? What inspired collectors to build significant holdings of works from cultures other than their own? And what are the issues facing curators and collectors of digital ephemera today? These are among the questions tackled in this volume-the first to examine the practices of collecting prints, posters, and ephemera during the modern and contemporary periods. A wide range of case studies feature collections of printed materials from the United States, Latin America, France, Germany, Great Britain, China, Japan, Russia, Iran, and Cuba. Fourteen essays and one roundtable discussion, all specially commissioned from art historians, curators, and collectors for this volume, explore key issues such as the roles of class, politics, and gender, and address historical contexts, social roles, value, and national and transnational aspects of collecting practices. The global scope highlights cross-cultural connections and contributes to a new understanding of the place of prints, posters and ephemera within an increasingly international art world.

Book excerpt: A selection of exemplary 20th-century Japanese woodblock prints from the collection of the Carnegie Museum of Art This volume presents more than 1,000 exemplary twentieth-century Japanese woodblock prints, from the collection of Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Taken together, the collection reflects the stylistic movements, aesthetic directions and historic changes of the past century, with particular emphasis on two significant movements: sosakuhanga (creative prints), represented by in-depth selections by Hiratsuka Un'ichi, Onchi Koshiro and Munakata Shiko; and shin-hanga (new prints), with works by Kawase Hasui and Hashiguchi Goyo. Carnegie Museum of Art also possesses several complete series of prints produced in such limited numbers that they are rarely seen today, including One Hundred Views of New Tokyo created between 1929 and 1932. In addition, an essay on the history and significance of the collection provides a brief introduction to Japanese printmaking in the twentieth century, making this illustrated guide an invaluable reference for researchers, curators, collectors and general enthusiasts of Japanese art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Print Collector: An Introduction to the Knowledge Necessary for Forming a Collection of Ancient Prints The study of art needs no apology. Man may sometimes acquire too much power, or too much money, for his own advantage or for the good of his fellow-men, but true art is like true religion - the more it is cultivated the richer are the heart and mind of its possessor. Should it not beget wisdom, it will increase knowledge; and these, if not twin brothers, are very closely related. There are good and bad systems of religion, as there are true and false forms of art, and a consideration of this analogy might be followed up with profit, to the edification of some people, and to the incredulity and disapprobation of others. In this new country, where for the last one hundred years utility has been the predominant idea, I have often wondered why the poetic mind of the age has not created a goddess of Utility, to whom we might render homage similar to that paid in the olden time at the shrines of the goddesses of Wisdom, Beauty, and Riches. We know that art in its highest forms is capable of inspiring the purest of religious sentiment, but this is only a portion of what it has done for the world in the past, and is capable of doing for us now. In all real art there is something which the lowliest person may partake of and enjoy; just as art may be found, and does exist, in the lowliest and simplest forms and detail. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Print Collector; An Introduction to the Knowledge Necessary for Forming a Collection of Ancient Prints The compiler of this little work has been a print-collector for upwards of twenty years, but he would much overstate its purport and pretensions if he were to profi'er it as containing the fruit of that length of experience: such experience is not of a nature to be communicated in words, or imparted by instruction, or acquired otherwise than by practice alone. All that he professes to do is to afford some little assistance to the young collector, such as shall enable him to commence his pursuit in a right direction. But, although it is not the fruit of experience that he pretends to communicate, it is the result of experience that induces him to publish. When he first began collecting, he was totally ignorant of all that is to be learned on the subject; he had a love for works of art.
