Book Prinny s Taylor

Download or read book Prinny s Taylor written by MR Charles Bazalgette and published by Tara Books. This book was released on 2015-09-05 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PHANTOM TAILOR The Prince of Wales, later George IV, is probably the most written-about of all British monarchs, and his excesses, his debts and the huge sums that he expended on his wardrobe are legendary. It is therefore strange that the man who was the Prince's tailor for over thirty-two years, and his principal tailor for over half of that time, should have been named, and then only in passing, in just two other books. The reason why Louis Bazalgette has been a shadowy figure until now is that the relationship between the two men was discreet and almost clandestine. This biography presents a detailed picture of an extraordinary man, of humble origins, whose influence on gentlemen's tailoring, and upon the Prince himself, must have been far-reaching. This fascinating story presents a new angle on Georgian and Regency life, as seen through the eyes of a little French tailor who by his own efforts became a very wealthy propertied merchant. There is also a great deal of information on gentlemen's tailoring of the period, a subject sparsely covered in other publications, and we are regaled in detail with the clothes that were made for Prinny, when and where he wore them and how much they cost. Many of the anecdotes about George are included, but given new meaning because of the fresh information that the author has discovered. Some of Louis Bazalgette's descendants also enter the story. His eldest son Joseph William Bazalgette, R.N, served with distinction during the Napoleonic wars, and his grandson of the same name was the noted civil engineer who made such a difference to London. The author is Louis' great-great-great-great-grandson. Lovers of the period will be delighted by many previously unpublished items which have been uncovered during over twenty years of painstaking research.

Book Leadership Gender And Culture In Education

Download or read book Leadership Gender And Culture In Education written by Collard, John and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This rich explorative book examines the intricacies of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class and how these complex influences weave their patterns in the daily lives of leaders. It achieves the difficult balance between acknowledging differences as well as unifying elements. The book also raises many questions about the context for leadership and examines the central issues of: leadership for what? What are leaders there to do - and for whom? To ensure that students achieve higher examination scores, or to promote equity and social justice? This book offers many fresh insights into these and other important questions." Professor Kathryn Riley, Institute of Education, University of London This book features chapters by leading international scholars on gender and educational leadership. Drawing on research in schools in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the United States and Canada, it introduces new discussions about the impact of gender, race, class, institutional setting and recent ideologies on leadership discourses. The book shows how early research has over-emphasized gender stereotypes and tended to simplify and polarize the ways men and women lead.Looking at differences and similarities in how men and women take on and exercise leadership roles, the authors counter essentialist claims based on biological, psychological and sociological theories that stress gender difference. The discussions employ sophisticated understandings of gender relations and leadership discourses in today's globalized context. The book is for students and scholars studying leadership and for leaders in different educational contexts around the world.

Book excerpt: On the eve of the Great Depression, Verna Krone, the child of Irish immigrants, must leave the eighth grade and begin working as a maid to help support her family. Her employer takes inappropriate liberties, and as Verna matures, it seems as if each man she meets is worse than the last. Through sheer force of will and a few chance encounters, she manages to teach herself to read and becomes a nurse. But Verna’s new life falls to pieces when she is arrested for assisting a black doctor with "illegal surgeries." As the media firestorm rages, Verna reflects on her life while awaiting trial. Based on the life of the author’s own grandmother and written after almost three hundred interviews with those involved in the real-life scandal, The Blue Orchard is as elegant and moving as it is exact and convincing. It is a dazzling portrayal of the changes America underwent in the first fifty years of the twentieth century. Readers will be swept into a time period that in many ways mirrors our own. Verna Krone’s story is ultimately a story of the indomitable nature of the human spirit—and a reminder that determination and self-education can defy the deforming pressures that keep women and other disenfranchised groups down.
