Download or read book Tensegrity Structures written by Jing Yao Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To facilitate a deeper understanding of tensegrity structures, this book focuses on their two key design problems: self-equilibrium analysis and stability investigation. In particular, high symmetry properties of the structures are extensively utilized. Conditions for self-equilibrium as well as super-stability of tensegrity structures are presented in detail. An analytical method and an efficient numerical method are given for self-equilibrium analysis of tensegrity structures: the analytical method deals with symmetric structures and the numerical method guarantees super-stability. Utilizing group representation theory, the text further provides analytical super-stability conditions for the structures that are of dihedral as well as tetrahedral symmetry. This book not only serves as a reference for engineers and scientists but is also a useful source for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. Keeping this objective in mind, the presentation of the book is self-contained and detailed, with an abundance of figures and examples.

Book Thermally Active Surfaces in Architecture

Download or read book Thermally Active Surfaces in Architecture written by Kiel Moe and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from the simple question Why do we heat and cool buildings with air?, this book focuses on the technique of thermally active surfaces. This technique uses water in building surfaces to heat and cool bodies - a method that is at once more efficient, comfortable, and healthy. This technique thus imbues the fabric of the building with a more poignant role: its structure is also its primary heating and cooling system. In doing so, this approach triggers a cascading set of possibilities for how well buildings are built, how well they perform, and how long they will last: pointing the way toward multiple forms of sustainability. The first section of the book contrasts the parallel histories of thermally active surfaces and air conditioning. These histories explain the material, social, marketing, and technical unfolding of building technology in the twentieth century as a means to explain why we build the way we do and why that will change in the new century. The next section of the book covers the physiological and thermodynamic basis of thermally active surfaces. This section is designed for engineers and architects to grasp the logic and advantages of this technique. This section also includes a chapter on the de-fragmentation of buildings and design practice that is inherent in building with thermally active surfaces. The final section covers a series of contemporary case studies that demonstrate the efficacy of this technique. The project list currently includes Kunsthaus in Bregenz by Peter Zumthor, Zollverein School of Management in Essen, Germany by SANAA, and Linked Hybrid in Beijing by Steven Holl, amongst others.

Book The Geometry of the Octonions

Download or read book The Geometry of the Octonions written by Tevian Dray and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are precisely two further generalizations of the real and complex numbers, namely, the quaternions and the octonions. The quaternions naturally describe rotations in three dimensions. In fact, all (continuous) symmetry groups are based on one of these four number systems. This book provides an elementary introduction to the properties of the octonions, with emphasis on their geometric structure. Elementary applications covered include the rotation groups and their spacetime generalization, the Lorentz group, as well as the eigenvalue problem for Hermitian matrices. In addition, more sophisticated applications include the exceptional Lie groups, octonionic projective spaces, and applications to particle physics including the remarkable fact that classical supersymmetry only exists in particular spacetime dimensions.Contents: Introduction"Number Systems: "The Geometry of the Complex NumbersThe Geometry of the QuaternionsThe Geometry of the OctonionsOther Number Systems"Symmetry Groups: "Some Orthogonal GroupsSome Unitary GroupsSome Symplectic GroupsSymmetry Groups over Other Division AlgebrasLie Groups and Lie AlgebrasThe Exceptional Groups"Applications: "Division Algebras in MathematicsOctonionic Eigenvalue ProblemsThe Physics of the OctonionsMagic Squares Readership: Advanced ubdergraduate and graduate students and faculty in mathematics and physics; non-experts with moderately sophisticated mathematics background. Key Features: This book is easily digestible by a large audience wanting to know the elementary introduction to octanionsSuitable for any reader with a grasp of the complex numbers, although familiarity with non-octonionic versions of some of the other topics would be helpfulMany open problems are very accessibleAdvanced topics covered are quite sophisticated, leading up to a clear discussion of (one representation of) the exceptional Lie algebras and their associated root diagrams, and of the octonionic projective spaces on which they act
