The efforts of theological seminaries, schools of philanthropy, schools of business, and schools of education to employ sociological theory as an instrument for the analysis of any kind of social situation, or as a master-key to all of their treasure houses, are destined, I still believe, to result in success. Such success awaits standardization, and that - again expressing merely my own opinion - the university professors will yet give us; they - some of them - will come to the aid of the schools that educate social workers and will trim down the far-ramifying sociological theory to the shape of a tool which these workers can be easily trained to use... In my class every student works on some group or institution with which he is familiar - his practice class, if he has one, or his boarding club, literary society, church, family, neighborhood. As we advance through the principles of sociology he applies them to his own special group and writes a sociological analysis of it by instalments. In this way sociological theory comes to him as an instrument for practical use rather than as a body of doctrine for the delectation of scholars. - American Sociological Society, Publications, Vol. 13, p.68; Clow, "Sociology in the Education of Teachers." While the general application of sociology to technical uses must probably await the appearance of a treatise such as is foreshadowed in the first paragraph above, this volume is designed to serve as a textbook for work such as is described in the second paragraph. To that end it omits several topics which usually find place in an introductory textbook in sociology. The only limit to the students freedom in selecting the group or organization on which he will use the sociological scalpel is that it must be one about which he has, or can get, adequate information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Principles of Sociology: A Text Book for Colleges and Universities The plan of the book is to give the student who takes but one course in sociology a general idea of the whole science, and to give to the student who Continues the subject a foundation for advanced work. Emphasis is placed upon those subjects that will be of greatest practical value to the student, such as immigration, the race question, the family, poverty, and crime, altho other phases of the science, such as the evolution of institutions and the general principles of social theory, are not neglected. At the end of each chapter is given a list of reading references, -so that the text can be used in a one term course with a limited amount of outside reading, and in a two terms course with more extended use of collateral readings. Chapter fourteen, on education, can easily be omitted if time is limited. Because of the general nature of the text and because much of the subject matter is common property, the author has made no attempt to refer to the original source of the information given; all the leading books used will be found in the bibliography at the end. The writer Wishes to express his appreciation for advice and help on the part of his friends and colleagues, especially to Prof. L. J. Mills for valued aid in revising the manuscript and to Mrs. Dow for her timely suggestions and aid thruout the entire work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology: Its Simpler Teachings and Applications IN an attempt to simplify the teachings of sociology and to show how they may be applied to social prob lems, the explanations may not always seem simple, nor the applications immediately practicable. The most elementary sociological vocabulary is necessarily some what technical, and there is to-day wide variation as to purpose and procedure in social reorganization. Yet the writer feels that there are many who will welcome a discussion Of social betterment which does not lead up to a socialistic conclusion. In educational and religious circles, in women's clubs and philanthropic associations, there is a deep interest in the question Of the regeneration of society, but a distrust Of the many short-cut methods presented as panaceas. Experience seems to teach that the road to Elysium is hard and toilsome,1 and that no Rome can be built in a day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Sociology, Vol. 1: Part II There are two great classes Of aggregates with which the social aggregate may be compared - the inorganic and the organic. Are the attributes Of a society in any way like those Of a not-living body? Or are they in any way like those Of a living body or are they entirely unlike those of both? The first Of these questions needs only to be asked to be answered in the negative. A whole Of which the parts are alive, cannot, in its general characters, be like lifeless wholes. The second question, not to be thus promptly answered, is to be answered in the affirmative. The rea sons for asserting that the permanent relations among the parts of a society, are analogous to the permanent relations among the parts of a living body, we have now to consider. Download or read book Sociology Its Development and Applications Classic Reprint written by James Quayle Dealey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology Its Development and Applications This work is an enlargement and revision of the au: thor's Sociology issued in 1909. In it no attempt has been made to work out a system, a sufficient number of which already exist, or to set forth novel and untried hypotheses in social theory. The author has sought rather to give a sort of survey of sociological development, so that the reader interested in social problems, or the stu dent desirous oi a comprehensible statement of the main aspects of sociology, may have in fairly brief compass a general view of its rise and its relations to other sci emees, a sketch of the development of social institutions, and a short discussion of social problems and of the factors to be considered in social progress. The volume, as a textbook for college purposes, may be supplemented by more detailed studies and by personal investigations of social conditions on the part of the stu dents. Its reading references, purposely abbreviated, may aid the general reader to follow more closely such aspects as may arouse interest. If both student and reader find the presentation of the subject matter fairly clear and helpful to an understanding of social questions, the purpose of the author will have been fulfilled. Book The Outlines of Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Outlines of Sociology Classic Reprint written by Edward Alsworth Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Sociology Here is my Principles of Sociology cut down a third, rearranged, rephrased and equipped for the class room. Still, I advise teachers who have been using Principles as a text not to discard it for this book. It is fuller, and as for the exercises, they can be had of the publisher in pamphlet form and placed in the hands Of each student. Outlines of Sociology is provided in order to meet the demand for a shorter text for the use of those who cannot devote as much as a semester to the subject. My thirty-two years of trying to impart Sociology to university students have resulted in a technique which teachers of this book may like to know about. Now that my system of Sociology is to be had between covers I do not lecture. I lead discussions. My class is broken up into sections not to exceed twenty-five members. Each student has his appointed seat and a glance over the section enables me to record absences on the seating chart before me. At the beginning Of the course every student is supplied with an assignment sheet (to be pasted inside the back cover of his text), which shows exactly what will be required Of him for every session in the semester. After ten or twelve minutes of sharp quizzing (here is where the quiz questions come in) we take up the exercises. If those per taining to the assigned lesson exceed five in number, the student answers only alternate exercises, those sitting in Odd-number seats answering odd-number exercises and those sitting in even-number seats answer ing even-number exercises. The student is expected to have wrestled with the exercises in advance and to bring with him written solutions. His paper is not to be handed in but is there as evidence that the student has given enough consideration to the problems to formulate and write down answers. When, after reading out an exercise I call upon Reed or Daly for an answer, he is not to improvise, but to read his written answer. If he has nothing in black and white he says unprepared, even if a bright idea is on his tongue's tip. After a few answers have been considered, the question is thrown open to general discussion and then the impromptu ideas get their innings.
