A number of specialists may collaborate in the production of a book which consists of several more or less isolated treatises on various separate phases of secondary education. Such a method has many merits, but precludes the develop ment of a consistently constructive theory. On the other hand, when a single individual attempts to write a book covering a field as broad as that of secondary education, there are always two possible dangers: either the limitations of the individual may lead to superficial treatment and error, or unsupported personal opinion and bias may dominate. The first of these dangers is minimized when the writer refrains from attempting to deal with the details of teach ing appropriate to the various studies of the secondary school program and confines this attention to more funda mental principles. In this book the author deals with special studies only in connection with the broader matters of aims and values, together with the larger elements of method necessarily involved. A later volume in this series will deal with the principles of teaching in the secondary school and several volumes will deal with methods of teaching special subjects or groups of subjects. These words, spoken to the author by a widely known science teacher, are in harmony with the statements of many prominent and successful teachers in other branches of high school study. Some years ago, having occasion to make a comparative study of all the available books on the teaching of secondary school subjects, the author was impressed by the striking parallel between the best of the books whenever method of instruction was treated. The chief differences were matters of omission, and the omissions in books in the same field were far from being the same. The only possible inference was that certain general principles of method are valid in all of the studies of the high school curriculum, and that the task of each teacher is not to construct his educational method regardless of these principles, but to adapt their application to his particular field. The present text is an attempt to assist the prospective or untrained teacher in a study of the principles upon which method in secondary instruction must be based. The book is a protest against formalism and mechanism, on the one hand, and unsystematic procedure on the other. The point of view is functional, in that in each step there is a procedure from discovery of aim to adaptation of process to aim. The author is also governed by the conviction that a well-planned lesson is more than a mere series of topics for study, but as a whole possesses an organic unity. Composition Of An Act Of Thought The Steps in Thinking.--The problematic procedure with which we have just dealt is that in which the pupil acquires information, either by hearing it, reading it, or observing. It is essentially a problem of knowing. On a higher intellectual plane, and involving a far more difficult task, is the problem which involves thinking out. It may be the derivation of a general principle from given concrete data, or it may be application of a general principle in the solution of a particular situation. In logical terms, the problem may be either inductive or deductive, or indeed may involve both logical processes. * In all problematic procedure, a complete act of thought involves four fairly distinct steps. These are, first, the recognition and formulation of the problem;1 second, a tentative solution or hypothesis; third, reasoning out the implications of the solution, and, fourth, the verification. Stated in terms of the principle of association, we find that the problematic learning of the thought type involves a complex system of both association and dissociation, of analysis and synthesis. In the first of the four steps, the student encounters the situation as a unity, and proceeds to analyze out its problematic elements. In the formulation of the hypothesis, he associates tentatively these problematic elements with others. The next step, the reasoning out of the implications, is essentially an analytic one, in which the synthesis thus formed is subjected to a further analysis. In the verification, the synthesis of the second step is reformed with new subordinate elements included. Thus, the questions the student asks are these: 1. In early infancy, before the child has acquired that power over thought and language which fits him for direct intercourse with those around him, ho is educated by the experience which he acquires through the natural activity of his instincts. In childhood and youth his education proceeds under the superintendence of the family circle and the school. In mature years, ho is again thrown upon the resources of self-education, but now with the power of controlling these for definite ends; and he finds in the intercourse of society, in his own reading and reflection, and in the ministrations of the Christian Church, the means by which his nature is to reach its destined measure of perfection. The education of childhood is often spoken of as if it were pre-eminently the education of the whole man. It is not so, however; the education which the man carries on of himself in maturity, when he has come to the possession of all his powers, is that which determines his character and position. The peculiar importance of the education of childhood lies in the consideration, that it prepares the way for the subsequent self-education of manhood. It brings the man into command of his faculties, and enables him to use his opportunities of progress; it equips him with intellectual, moral, and practical principles, but for which he would pass through life without any purpose of self-improvement, and without the power of profiting by its experience.
