Book Nuclear Methods in Mineralogy and Geology

Download or read book Nuclear Methods in Mineralogy and Geology written by Attila Vértes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appears a century after the discovery of radioactivity. It was in 1896, when Henri Becquerel reported his first results about the penetrating radiation, which could darken the packed photographic plates. The initial fascination of radioactivity, e.g., the discovery of new radioactive elements, the first real description of the structure of atoms and their nuclei, the applications of radiotracers, the high sensitivity of activation analysis, etc., was followed by the use of atomic bomb in 1945. The mushroom cloud became a symbol of destructive nuclear power. And even nuclear energy production (which provides about 20% of the world's electricity) is overshadowed by radioactive waste. However, the latest results suggest that the Accelerator-Driven Transmutation Technology (ADTT) will solve this problem, since this technique can decrease the lifetime of the fission products comparatively to the human lifespan. Practical control of fusion may also be possible in the first decades of the next millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is the study of the atomic nucleus, and its constituents and interactions. It is concerned with diverse nuclear phenomena, such as nuclear decay and radioactivity, nuclear fission and fusion, nucleosynthesis, etc. This field has brought about advancements in the spheres of medicine, energy, agriculture, engineering, archaeology and geology. Such innovations include nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging, radiocarbon dating, nuclear power, nuclear weapons, etc. Most of the current understanding of particle physics is derived from in-depth studies of nuclear physics. The research in nuclear physics concerns the study of nuclei under extreme conditions of high spin and excitation energy. Nuclei may have extreme neutron-to-proton ratios, or these may be created with artificially induced fusion or nucleon transfer reactions. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the field of nuclear physics. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies and advanced studies in this field have been included herein. This book is a collective contribution of a renowned group of international experts.

Book Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology

Download or read book Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology written by Yuri M. Tsipenyuk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of nuclear physics methods is now widespread throughout physics, chemistry, metallurgy, biology, clinical medicine, geology, and archaeology. Accelerators, reactors, and various instruments that have developed together with nuclear physics have often been found to offer the basis for increasingly productive and more sensitive analytical techniques. Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology provides scientists and engineers with a clear understanding of the basic principles of nuclear methods and their potential for applications in a wide range of disciplines. The first part of the book covers the major points of basic theory and experimental methods of nuclear physics, emphasizing concepts and simple models that give a feel for the behavior of real systems. Using many examples, the second part illustrates the extraordinary possibilities offered by nuclear methods. It covers the Mossbauer effect, slow neutron physics, activation analysis, radiography, nuclear geochronology, channeling effects, nuclear microprobe, and numerous other topics in modern applied nuclear physics. The book explores applications such as tomography, the use of short-lived isotopes in clinical diagnoses, and nuclear physics in ecology and agriculture. Where alternative nonnuclear analytical techniques are available, the author compares the relevant nuclear method, enabling readers to judge which technique may be most useful for them. Complete with a bibliography and extensive reference list for readers who want to delve deeper into a particular topic, this book applies various methods of nuclear physics to a wide range of disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is a field of physics that is concerned with the study of atomic nuclei, their constituents and interactions. The structure and properties of the nucleus can be understood from the classical and quantum mechanical approaches of liquid-drop model and the nuclear shell model respectively. Current research in nuclear physics studies nuclei under extreme conditions, such as under high excitation energy and high spin. Nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios can be artificially created, by the processes of nucleon transfer reactions or induced fusion reactions. Some of the significant areas of study in nuclear physics are nuclear decay processes, nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. Advances in nuclear physics have transformed the fields of medicine, warfare, energy, geology and archaeology. This book elucidates the advanced principles of nuclear physics and their applications in a multidisciplinary manner. It strives to provide a fair idea about this discipline and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances within this field. It attempts to assist those with a goal of delving into the field of nuclear physics.
