Book Principles of Grammar Learning

Download or read book Principles of Grammar Learning written by William O'Grady and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Grammar and Learning is concerned with the nature of linguistic competence and with the cognitive structures underlying its acquisition and use. During the past several decades many linguists and psychologists have come to the conclusion that genetically determined categories and principles specific to language are needed to account for the form and acquisition of grammatical systems. William O'Grady argues here for quite a different conclusion, proposing that adequate grammars can be constructed from a conceptual base not specific to language. To support this thesis, O'Grady develops a well-articulated, single level, categorial-type grammar that he uses to analyze syntactic categories, extraction, anaphora, extraposition, and quantifier placement in English and other languages. He shows that such grammars can be constructed via general learning strategies from notions such as dependency, adjacency, precedence, and continuity, and that the available acquisition data points to the emergence of the principles he proposes. While exploratory, this book provides one of the few serious attempts to develop a theory of grammar and learning that does not posit faculty-specific innate principles. Principles of Grammar and Learning is an exemplary attempt to bring together issues and data from syntactic theory, language acquisition, and the more general study of the human mind.

Book excerpt: Based on a series of lectures given by Leonard Peikoff in 1981, Principles of Grammar offers not only an organized survey of grammatical rules and principles but their connection to the principles of clear thinking and clear writing. "At the end of the course," says Dr. Peikoff, "you should be able to see every grammatical rule, directly or indirectly, as a consequence or expression of some essential requirement of the human mind," not "a simply a hodge-podge of memorized rules that make no sense. ... I hope that [the course will give you] a sense of logic and security. Logic in regard to understanding the nature of grammatical issues-why they are as they are-and therefore security in regard to the whole subject. You will know the purpose, the rationale of the rules, and so I hope you will be able to think at the end that you can now make decisions on your own dubious or controversial cases. You don't have to rely helplessly on authorities."About the Author: Leonard PeikoffLeonard Peikoff is the preeminent Ayn Rand scholar writing today. Book The Principles of English Grammar

Download or read book The Principles of English Grammar written by John F. Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Grammar: Unfolded to Learners by a New Method, in a Strictly Progressive Order, With Copious Exercises for Parsing and Analysis The merits of a book are best perceived when viewed from the author's standpoint, and when its parts are considered in relation to the results which he has sought to secure. It is not attempted in this book to exhaust the subject of English Grammar. The aim is to grasp the essential principles of the subject, to illustrate these clearly and fully, and to furnish the learner an abundant supply of examples, by which he may cultivate his own skill, in discerning and pointing out these principles in parsing and analyzing. The practice here contemplated and provided for, will make the learner so familiar with all the essential features of the English language as to secure its correct use, and be the best possible safeguard against error; and will lay a good foundation for the critical study of this or any other language. Those who would understand how the author has accomplished this object, are invited to read carefully the Introduction, in which his method is briefly set forth, and then examine in detail the progress of the book. The arrangement adopted to furnish an easy progress to the learner is such, that a glance here and there at disconnected portions will give an erroneous idea of the character of the work. Please examine it in its order, and observe the easy transition provided for the pupil from any one topic to the next. Book excerpt: A lot of people who want to learn English complain that it is too hard to learn, but what if it weren't? If English were actually really easy - and fun! - to learn, would you take a little time every day to study it? What would it mean to you if we guaranteed that you could know all the English grammar necessary for you to be fluent by studying it for 1 hour every day? That is what this book is all about. We teach you all the grammar that you need to know to become completely fluent in beginning-level English. As you learn grammar our way, the correct way, three things will happen: 1) grammar won't be hard to learn, 2) you will be able to communicate with most people on a basic level, and 3) you will actually enjoy learning it.This book is intended for everyone who wants to learn English as a non-native speaker. It teaches the basic principles of English grammar so that any ESL/ELL student can achieve basic communication skills. ESL teachers, and other teachers required to teach ESL in their classrooms, will also find this guide very helpful. We, as the English Masters, sat down and asked ourselves, "What grammar rules does someone needs to know in order to be completely fluent in English? Okay, now let's make sure every English learner has access to them." We are bringing you this book so that whoever you are - a teacher, a student learning English, a mother or father learning more English to speak at their jobs or with their children - you will know the grammar you need to communicate with other English speakers about many different situations and topics.1-Hour Grammar is the best grammar book you can find is because it is completely geared towards adults and young adults. Most ESL grammar resources are very childish, or if they have been written for adults, they aren't designed well at all and are overly complicated. This book was designed to be an attractive, easy-to-use resource from which any older student can learn because until now, something like that just didn't exist. Those considering which ESL grammar books will help them the most will find this resource to be superior, as 1-Hour Grammar teaches you the correct way. Other resources are completely incorrect when it comes to helping you learn, remember, and use English grammar, but 1-Hour Grammar bridges that gap and helps you become fluent in English, even within 1 hour of study. We guarantee that: if you study from this book for 1 hour every day, you will learn the fundamentals of English within two months. If you study grammar for 1 hour every week, we guarantee you will learn English within a year. This is proven and easy for you to master, and yes, we did say 'easy'. We know you will enjoy learning English grammar principles with this book!

Book Principles and Parameters in Comparative Grammar

Download or read book Principles and Parameters in Comparative Grammar written by Robert Freidin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays by an outstanding group of linguists present case studies in contemporary comparative grammar, illustrating the rich and varied ways in which the principles and parameters framework of generative grammar can provide explanations for both the underlying universal properties of the world's languages and the ways in which they differ. The final essay by Noam Chomsky offers a new perspective on the principles and parameters approach to comparative grammar. In his introduction, Freidin describes the historical background of current work in comparative grammar and compares this work to the comparative studies of the nineteenth century. He notes how the current approach traces the fundamental unity of all languages to the language faculty, in contrast to that of the nineteenth century which was primarily concerned with the ancestral relations among languages. The essays that follow convey the wide scope of the interaction between current theory and crosslinguistic studies. Topics include the relevance of binding theory for crosslinguistic studies; the interaction between the syntax/lexical semantics interface and the theory of UG; the role of phrase structure and levels of representation in accounting or syntactic variation; crosslinguistic variation in word order phenomena; and the ways in which the study of comparative grammar can itself contribute to the understanding of UG.
