Book Principles of Geometry Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Geometry Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by H. F. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geometry, Vol. 2 It will be seen that the volume deals with a wide range of theory; in other conditions than the present, a less condensed treatment might have been desirable. The order in which the ideas are taken has been chosen largely in view of the second aim of the volume; it will not be difficult, with the help of the Table of Contents, for the reader to modify this order. It is believed, however, that a large amount of the time usually spent, at present, in learning geometry, could be saved by following, from the beginning, after an extensive study of diagrams and models, the order of develop ment here adopted; and such a plan would make much less demand upon the memory. But the second aim of the volume may, I hope, appeal to attentive readers. It is an attempt, tempered indeed by practical consid tions, to test the application in detail of the logical principles ex plained in Volume I. It seeks to bring to light the assumptions which underlie an extensive literature in which coordinates are freely used without attempt at justification. It suggests the question whether, in the case of distance, as in many other cases, we may not have derived from familiarity with physical experiences, a confidence which a more careful scrutiny can only regard as an illusion. When this View, which seems sure, shall win acceptance, the change in scientific thought will be rapid and momentous. As the first step in this sense was made in the development of the theory of our geo metrical conceptions, it is proper that the matter should be dealt with here. It will be of importance if the reader come to see how deep lying are the questions involved in the use of coordinates, and the assumption of distance as a fundamental idea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geometry, Vol. 4 The book, for which indeed, mostly, the earlier volumes were undertaken, still bears many marks of the difficulty of compressing the matter into brief compass. But the writer hopes that it may seem to the reader as remarkable as it does to him, that it should be possible to comprehend under one point of view, and that so simple, the introduction to nearly all the surfaces ordinarily studied in the geometry of three dimensions, as well as the usual line geometry. Chapters V, VI, VII seek to make clear that this is so. To these the earlier chapters are auxiliary. But Chapters II and IV have been introduced as much for their own interest as for their illustrative value; the results obtained in these two chapters are not required in the subsequent pages. It is hoped that the Table of Contents, and the Index, may make it easy to use the volume. It will of course be understood that the volume is throughout intended to be introductory and illustrative; hardly anywhere is it complete. Download or read book Principles of Geometry Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by H. F. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geometry, Vol. 3 HE present volume is devoted to geometry in three dimensions. The discussion of the logical standpoint, to which sufficient space has been given in the preceding volume, is left aside; and, from a desire to limit the size of the volume, many things are omitted which might well have been included. What is given may, however, be regarded as essential to any student who professes to have received a mathematical education. The aptitude for geo metrical construction in space, important as it is in the applications of mathematics to physics and engineering, receives, in our educa tional system at present, less training than it deserves. It is the writer's hope that this volume may help to emphasize this; and may convey to readers something of the fascination and freedom which belongs to' the reduction of intricate geometrical relations to the properties of a constructed figure. Only by such methods, moreover, can progress be made beyond the first principles of the subject. Up to the end of Chapter III, this volume was in type when death severed an association to which the writer owed more help than he can well express. In business, James Bennet Peace was clear and honest in friendship, constant and self-regardless; many beside the writer deplore his loss. To him, and to the co-operation of the other members of the Staff of the University Press, great acknowledgment is due. Book Projective Geometry Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Projective Geometry Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Oswald Veblen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Projective Geometry, Vol. 2 The present volume is an attempt to carry out the program out lined in the preface to Volume I. Unfortunately, Professor Young was obliged by the pressure of other duties to cease his collabora tion at an early stage of the composition of this volume. Much of the work on the first chapters had already been done when this hap pened, but the form of exposition has been changed so much since then that although Professor Young deserves credit for constructive work, he cannot fairly be held responsible for mistakes or oversights. Professor Young has kindly read the proof sheets of this volume, as have also Professors A. B. Coble and A. A. Bennett. Most of the drawings were made by Dr. J. W. Alexander. I offer my thanks to all of these gentlemen and also to Messrs. Ginn and Company, who have shown their usual courtesy and efficiency while converting the manuscript into a book. The second volume has been arranged so that one may pass on a first reading from the end of Chapter VII, Volume I, to the beginning of Volume II. The later chapters of Volume I may well be read in connection with the part of Volume II from Chapter V onward. I shall pass by the opportunity to discuss any of the pedagogical questions which have been raised in connection with the first vol ume and which may easily be foreseen for the second. It is to be expected that there will continue to be a general agreement among those who have not made the experiment, that an abstract method of treatment of geometry is unsuited to beginning students. In this book, however, we are committed to the abstract point of view. We have in mind two principles for the classification of any theorem of geometry: (a) the axiomatic basis, or bases, from which it can be derived, or, in other words, the class of spaces in which it can be valid; and (b) the group to which it belongs in a given space. Book Principles of Geometry

Download or read book Principles of Geometry written by William Ritchie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geometry: Familiarly Illustrated, and Applied to a Variety of Useful Purposes; Designed for the Instruction of Young Persons That a great book is a great evil, is an aphorism the truth of which few pupils will feel disposed to call in question; and that there is no royal road to geometry, though an old observation, is nearly as true as when it was first uttered; for though several new plans have been proposed, and well executed, the line of road sketched out and finished nearly two thousand years ago, is generally preferred. To shorten the road, to render it as smooth as the materials will admit, and to open to the view of the young traveller frequent glimpses of the rich domains of science, into which he has now entered, are objects which the author has kept steadily in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book on Practical Solid or Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 2 The author, in writing this text-book, has endeavoured to meet the wants of both elementary and advanced students, and he believes that it will be found to contain all the de scriptive geometry which is usually required by engineering and architectural draughtsmen. But while making the book comprehensive, and illustrating it fully, it has not been made of an inconvenient size for use in large classes.
