Excerpt: ... between the veins of the system and the respiratory vessels, was seen in the Crustacea, where the venous sinuses, situated at the commencement of the branchial arches, may be regarded as so many repetitions of a simple form of a respiratory heart. In the class of Fishes, it will be seen that the heart is entirely respiratory, the arterial trunk which proceeds from it being distributed at once to the gills, and the blood which has been aerated in them being returned into a systemic artery or aorta, whence it proceeds to the body at large. In the higher Cephalopoda we observe a curious form of the circulating apparatus, which manifestly establishes the transition between that of the Mollusca in general, and that which is peculiar to Fishes. The systemic heart consists of only one cavity or ventricle, which is usually of a globular form, tolerably strong and muscular, and exhibiting bundles of fibres (carnece columtue) interlacing with one another (Fig. 118), as well as distinct valves protecting the mouths of the vessels which open into it. The aorta which proceeds from it, distributes arterial blood to the general system; and this is returned by means of the venous trunks, not immediately to the gills, as in the other Mollusca, but to two superadded impelling cavities, one of which is situated in connection with each row of gills. These branchial ventricles are less powerful than that which propels the blood through the system; but they are still sufficiently muscular and contractile to accelerate the circulation through the respiratory organs, and thus to prepare the blood for the maintenance of the increased muscular exertions which are required for the superior locomotive powers of these animals, as well as for the general activity of...

Book Aristotle s Ladder Darwin s Tree

Download or read book Aristotle s Ladder Darwin s Tree written by J. David Archibald and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading paleontologist J. David Archibald explores the rich history of visual metaphors for biological order from ancient times to the present and their influence on humans' perception of their place in nature, offering uncommon insight into how we went from standing on the top rung of the biological ladder to embodying just one tiny twig on the tree of life. He begins with the ancient but still misguided use of ladders to show biological order, moving then to the use of trees to represent seasonal life cycles and genealogies by the Romans. The early Christian Church then appropriated trees to represent biblical genealogies. The late eighteenth century saw the tree reclaimed to visualize relationships in the natural world, sometimes with a creationist view, but in other instances suggesting evolution. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) exorcised the exclusively creationist view of the "tree of life," and his ideas sparked an explosion of trees, mostly by younger acolytes in Europe. Although Darwin's influence waned in the early twentieth century, by midcentury his ideas held sway once again in time for another and even greater explosion of tree building, generated by the development of new theories on how to assemble trees, the birth of powerful computing, and the emergence of molecular technology. Throughout Archibald's far-reaching study, and with the use of many figures, the evolution of "tree of life" iconography becomes entwined with our changing perception of the world and ourselves.

Book The History of the Cholera in Exeter in 1832

Download or read book The History of the Cholera in Exeter in 1832 written by Thomas Shapter and published by . This book was released on 1849 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shapter's history of Exeter's 1832 cholera epidemic -- part of the worldwide cholera pandemic of 1829-51 -- includes his 'Map of Exeter in 1832 shewing the localities where the deaths caused by pestilential cholera occurred in the years 1832, 1833 & 1834', one of the first examples of an epidemic 'spot map.' 'Shapter's text and map presented a 'topography of disease' in which the incidence of cholera over three years was considered within the city of Exeter. Shapter recorded both mortality and morbidity across the outbreak in a chart of epidemic occurrence. He then used official mortality reports that included decedents' street addresses to locate cholera mortality in a map of the city. A mortality ratio based on parish population was recorded in the map legend. This amounted to a spatial description of mortality data . . . mapped clusters of cholera appearing to occur more frequently in parishes along the low-lying riverbanks of the city . . . than at higher altitude away from the river where air was purer' (Koch, Disease Maps: Epidemics on the Ground, p. 156). Shapter's map, which did not mark wells or pump locations, appeared to confirm his theory that cholera was a miasmatic disease caused by 'bad air.' John Snow, whose On the Pathology and Mode of Communication of the Cholera appeared the same year as Shapter's work, interpreted Shapter's data differently, using it to help demonstrate the link between disease outbreaks and contaminated water sources."--Antiquarian bookseller's description, 2017.
