Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Metallic Bridges This book is based upon the ninth edition of The Stresses in Bridge and Roof Trusses, Arched Ribs, and Suspension Bridges, by one of the Authors of this volume. T hat work, however, has been so thoroughly rewritten and such a large amount of new matter has been introduced that a new title has been' adopted. It has been the intention of the Authors to prepare a comprehensive book covering all types of trusses used to a material extent in American bridge practice, or at least all trusses forming the basis of that practice. In con formity With this plan, the most advanced methods of stress computations, as well as those that are older, have been employed. Book Economic Development of Bridge Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Economic Development of Bridge Construction Classic Reprint written by Peter Soo-Hoo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Development of Bridge Construction The relative merits of the different types of simple railway bridges are well understood, but very little has been written treating the subject directly. As the subject is an important one any bridge engineer should be a master of it. The author feels the necessity of a thorough understanding of this subject for his future career, and takes the Opportunity to study it When good libraries are accessible for compilation. He compiles this work to treat on the general design of railway bridges, and does not expect to deal With detail construction. It would be well to have a study of the relative merits of all the differant types of bridges, but as such a study is exceedingly broad, only the relative merits of simple steel railway bridges are considered. The wora simple is used to include bridges Whose stresses are statically determinate, cantilever bridges excepted, and the word steel is used to mean Bessemer or Open hearth steel which are sometimes called ingot iron. Book The Design of Simple Steel Bridges Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Design of Simple Steel Bridges Classic Reprint written by Philip Osborne Gordon Usborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Simple Steel Bridges IN writing this book my idea has been to revise and rearrange my former book, entitled Manual of Bridge Design, which has been used for some considerable time as a text-book on this subject by the Royal Engineers at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham. I have endeavoured to depart from the generality of text books, and to keep ever before the student the practical aim or object for which he is striving. I have also tried always to illustrate theoretical deductions and conclusions with examples from actual practice. The book is full of practical examples and illustrations, and contains many details of all sorts connected with bridge work. I have confined this work to simple bridges. On all hands text-books by celebrated men abound which investigate most thoroughly every conceivable kind of structure or girder, books which go into deep mathematics, and which at their conclusion do not venture to advise any particular course of action under any set circumstances, but leave the engineer to decide for himself. In this book I have therefore avoided any deep mathematics; a graphic solution of every problem is given where such a solution is useful, and I. Have in simple language endeavoured to advise or lay down a course of action in almost every case. And although the course of action recommended may sometimes be open to question as to whether it is the best, yet I think it is always good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah (d. 923/1517) of Damascus was one of the great women scholars in Islamic history. A mystic and prolific poet and writer, 'A'ishah composed more works in Arabic than any other woman before the twentieth century. Yet despite her extraordinary literary and religious achievements, 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah remains largely unknown. For the first time her key work, The Principles of Sufism, is available in English translation. The Principles of Sufism is a mystical guide book to help others on their spiritual path. She recounts the fundamental stages and states of the spiritual novice’s transformative journey, emphasizing the importance of embracing both human limitations and God’s limitless love. Drawing on lessons and readings from centuries-old Sufi tradition, 'A'ishah advises the seeker to repent of selfishness and turn to a sincere life of love. In addition to his lucid translation, Th. Emil Homerin provides an insightful introduction, notes and a glossary to 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah’s remarkable account of the pursuit of mystical illumination. A bilingual Arabic-English edition.
