This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Economics is magnum opus of Alfred Marshall. It was the standard text for generations of economics students. Marshal’s plan for the work gradually extended to a two-volume compilation on the whole of economic thought. Marshall's influence on modifying economic thought is difficult to deny. He popularized the use of supply and demand functions as tools of price determination; modern economists owe the linkage between price shifts and curve shifts to Marshall.

Book Principles of Political Economy Illustrated

Download or read book Principles of Political Economy Illustrated written by John Stuart Mill and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outstanding work of economics by John Stuart Mill overviews the workings of the entire economy as it was understood during the nineteenth century. This edition includes all of the original maps, charts, illustrations and appendixes. A fascinating look at economic theory as it was during the industrial revolution, the five books express the economic ideas which characterized the era and acted as theoretical foundations later thinkers built upon and refined. Following the introductory passages, the first book describes the various attributes and mechanisms involved in production. The necessity of labor, of land, of natural resources, and of capital to establish sustained production, and the various inefficiencies which impact it, are covered. Mill notably establishes laws, whereby output upon a given tract of land, and increases from capital, are to increase year after year. The second book, entitled Distribution, looks at how the fruits of the economy's production are dispersed across a wider population. Types of physical assets, the wages for labor, reinvested profits, and rental income receive examination. Noting the vast amount of labor subsisting on low wages at the time, Mill proposes measures for increasing wages and thereby consumption of goods produced. The third book, Exchange, looks at the function and presence of money and trade from various angles. Mill conducts analyses of the rental market, the value of money, international trade and its determining values, and the foreign exchange of currencies. Cross-borders competition in different industries, and a case study of precious metals in international trade is concentrated upon. In the fourth book, Mill attempts to define the progress of society in the context of growing production and hence distribution. The affect such activity has upon wages, the rental markets, and the profitability of different companies, is focused upon. Mill finally returns to the topic of the laboring classes, whose abysmal working and living conditions had become a cause for great concern in the 19th century. The fifth and final book discusses the influence that government may have on an economy. For the most part, Mill turns his focus to taxation which he divides into direct taxes upon businesses and workers, and indirect taxes which are levied upon individual goods. The benefits and shortcomings of each are covered, as is the government's role in controlling national debt levels and potentially intervene in markets. With the publication in 1890 of Alfred Marshall's masterwork Principles of Economics, the term 'economics' quickly replaced the archaic 'political economy'. However many of John Stuart Mill's ideas influenced thinkers for decades to come, leaving a decided mark on the fledgling social science of economics.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...explained in the last chapter is formed out of a large number of individual demand schedules, and (2) that each individual demand schedule is in turn formed out of two " desirability " schedules. In the first place, then, what we have called the demand schedule is only an aggregate demand schedule. It is for the whole market, and resolvable into constituent demand schedules, one for each particular person in the market. The total demand at any price is merely the sum of the individual demands at that price. For instance, let the following table represent the demand schedules for coal of two individuals distinguished as Individual No. I and Individual No. II, at prices of from $12 to $2 per ton: --Demand Schedules Peice No. INo. II ()Total (o + 4) o) $12IOI 10202 83O3 64I5 S 527 4639 37411 2861 4 The table tells us that at a price of $12 a ton Individual No. I will take only one ton, and Individual No. II will not take any; that at a price of $6 a ton Individual No. I will take four tons, and Individual No. II will take one ton; and so on. The last column gives the sum of the demands of these two individuals. If we should extend such a table to include the demands of all the individuals in the community, we would obtain in the last column the total demand in the community. The total demand schedule is thus merely the sum of the individual demand schedules found by adding together all the individual amounts demanded at any given price. Behind the total demand schedule, therefore, are a number of constituent demand schedules. y 1 7 6 J KS is S 4 3dr)sn yVvs S %s, ri 2 1 rt'H Oi a 3 4 s6 7 a 9 10 j Mz 13 M-X'-F1G. 30. Book Principles of Microeconomics

Download or read book Principles of Microeconomics written by Martin Kolmar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive and unique introduction to modern microeconomics. It pursues an integrative approach by putting the main findings of economics into a broader perspective; theories are critically reflected on from a philosophical standpoint and by comparing them to approaches found in the social sciences, while implications for the design of the legal system and business practices are highlighted throughout. In addition, the book presents brief examples and comprehensive case studies to facilitate an understanding of the theories’ real-world implications. Starting from the question as to why and how societies organize economic activity, the book adopts an institutional perspective to analyze the potential and limitations of different market types with regard to alleviating scarcity and achieving distributive objectives. It not only covers traditional rational-choice models, but also systematically introduces readers to important findings from behavioral economics and psychology. A companion workbook is available which features a wide variety of exercises, ranging from basic multiple-choice questions to challenging mathematical problems and case study scenarios.
