Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Combustion in the Steam Boiler Furnace Specific fuel, and if such function is to be properly fulfilled, it is essential that the furnace Operator understand the broader principles involved in combustion. Unfortunately, from the standpoint of efficient steam generation, the statement is too frequently accepted as true that theoretical generalizations and mathematical formulae are of but little value to the operating engineer. To an extent, such statements may be true, but on the other hand it is to be remembered that combustion is purely a chemical phenomenon and as such can be properly investigated and controlled only by chemical means. Experience resulting from the cut and try methods of ordinary actual practise in the burning of individual fuels is unquestionably an important factor in the bringing about of efficient furnace results, but it is obvious that such results will be most readily secured when this experience is combined with a full knowledge of the theory of combustion and the proper application of the available methods used in obtaining combustion data. Further, the importance of such knowledge is today greater than it has ever been. Most apparatus for the generation of power has reached a state of development where there is but little likelihood of any great in crease in economy. The generally accepted types of steam boiler used in present day power plant practise have the inherent ability to absorb heat efficiently and from this standpoint may be included with the apparatus from which much more cannot be expected. If we accept this statement as true, the efficient generation of steam in the boiler proper becomes in reality a question of efficient combustion, and it is this phase of boiler practise the efficient generation of heat in the boiler furnace - in which there is the greatest and in fact the only field for appreciable improvement. Book Steam Boiler Practice

Download or read book Steam Boiler Practice written by Walter B. Snow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Boiler Practice: In Its Relation to Fuels and Their Combustion and the Economic Results Obtained With Various Methods and Devices Steam-boiler practice as here comprehended is con cerned rather with the results obtained than with a detailed description of the methods and devices employed to secure the economical combustion of fuel in connection with a steam boiler. The design and construction/of the boiler, with its furnace and accessories, form the subject-matter of other works, and, therefore, do not require treatment here. Like wise special methods oi operation and devices for increasing the efficiency have elsewhere received their share of attention. There appears, however, to be a place for a work simple in its treatment and reasonably comprehensive in its character, which shall deal primarily with effects rather than with causes, which shall undertake to indicate the possible gain or loss to result from a given arrangement, and shall point the way toward securing the highest efficiency in steam-boiler practice. Such a work it has been the earnest endeavor to here present; a work neither too abstruse for the practical engineer nor too rudimentary for the technical student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boilers and Combustion Unfortunately most of the books published are highly technical works dealing with what has been done and not with the possibilities of future development. This Spells a great danger to initiative - which is discounted to a great extent - by placing too much reliance on the past rather than encouraging a determined attack on future possibilities. A learned professor has gone farther than most in this direction when he asserted that engineers and boiler experts had been fostering wrong ideas in Spite of the fact that extended practice qualified present laws. His declaration that the theories accepted, and their laws, were utterly wrong, is a deduction from what his own experiments revealed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Boilers There is given a description of various types of boilers in common use. Following this is a discussion of combustion, corrosion, and incrustation, with a statement of the most recent investigations and conclusions on these important subjects. We are fortunately able to give a satisfactory table of the compositions of American fuels - the first, so far as we are aware, that has been published. A statement is given of the proper and of the customary sizes and form of furnaces, and of the methods of firing. In the present unsatisfactory condition of the chimney problem we have contented ourselves with giving the ordinary theory and pointing out its defects, together with the common ways of proportioning chimneys. BLUE BOOK OF Oil Burning and Burners HEAT AND COMBUSTION When we speak of fuel oil we generally mean the oil which is burned in the furnaces of steam boilers. The best engineer is the one who can make the most steam with the least fuel. Heat may be produced in many ways, but for the purpose of the marine engineer it is only necessary to consider the heat generated in the furnace by burning fuel oil and coal. The degree or intensity of heat can be measured by a thermometer or pyrometer. The quantity of heat necessary to produce a certain temperature is measured in heat units. The British Thermal Unit (B.T.U.) is 1/180 of the amount of heat necessary to raise one pound of water from a temperature of 320 F to 2120 F. Roughly one B.T.U. will raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree. Above 2120, water is changed into steam, by the addition of heat and the above definition is not true of steam. The best fuels contain the most B.T.U.'s per 1 pound. The average good steaming coals contain between 11,000 and 14500 B.T.U.'s per pound, while fuel oils contain as high as 20,000 B.T.U.'s per pound. Unfortunately, there is no quick practical method by which the engineer can judge of the quality of his fuel. The number of heat units per pound must be determined in a laboratory with an instrument called a calorimeter, and to be of any value the test must be very carefully 'and accurately made. Consequently the engineer must judge of the quality of his fuel by its actual performance in his furnace. But a knowledge of the fundamental principles of heat and combustion cannot fail to help in saving at the fuel pile. Heat is generated by combustion, or the burning of coal or oil in the furnace. Coal and fuel oil consist principally of carbon, ..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Economy of Fuel, Particularly With Reference to Reverberatory Furnaces for the Manufacture of Iron, and to Steam Boilers 6. There are few manufacturing processes that have not been greatly revolutionized, simplified, and extended within these fifty years, and had none but this narrow arched crania race been en gaged in them, these improvements would never have been made; for if no one can be found with sufficient knowledge, enterprise, and love of perfection, to be the first to try. A new thing, progress becomes impossible. Just the state of things in fact, which exists amongst many nations, whose civilization is stationary or retrograde, and whom we justly look upon as our inferiors laggards in the race of improvement, whose rank in the scale of. Book Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion Classic Reprint written by William H. Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion The Author has endeavoured to connect the two practices, for in the present state of liquid fuel supply it is more than probable that its use will be parallel with the use of coal, especially in dealing with the sudden and high load peaks of electric stations. Liquid fuel cannot be universal unless the supply increases to many times what it is at present, and this points to a good future for the mixed system of firing, Oil and coal being burned together in the same furnace. It has been difficult to make a selection of apparatus to be described, but the Author trusts that he has selected a sufficient number of types practically to cover the ground and show the general trend of practice without unduly multiplying examples. Indeed the tendency seems to him to be in the direction of one general type. As regards special boilers, Oil does not appear to require anything more than what is required by coal, though coal is not treated to the necessary appliances, and oil is so treated, and gains success where coal is allowed to fail. Much that perhaps ought to appear in such a book as this has been omitted, as it appears to the Author that the question of draught, for example, is not of'the same importance with liquid fuel as it is with solid fuels. More might be said on the subject of flue-gas proportion, but this again has been so fully treated by other writers that it did not seem desirable at present to deal with it more fully. The most important detail of liquid fuel apparatus is the furnace and the provision of air, and of means to secure combustion and conserve temperature to enable combustion to be made perfect. Mr. Horace Allen kindly revised the section on gas analysis. Students of liquid fuel combustion will find enormous masses of information in the past volumes of the Engineer, Engineering, and other technical papers. Much of this information is duplicated and historical, and the Author has found it necessary to eliminate almost all such matter and confine his space to systems now living or of recent use, or of a form recognized as useful to - day. Undoubtedly Aydon and the late Admiral Selwyn did much to urge the use of liquid fuel, but the latter injured the value of his best work by regarding steam as a combustible. Book The Baldwin Locomotive Works

Download or read book The Baldwin Locomotive Works written by Burnham, Williams & Co., Philadelphia and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baldwin Locomotive Works: Locomotive Data The motive power requirements of railways are so varied, that every system must employ a number of different types of locomotives with which to handle its traffic. It is not possible here to describe all the types in common use, but attention may be called to a few characteristic features of locomotives designed for different classes of service. Excluding such work as switching, logging and industrial, the majority of locomotives are used in road service, and this may be divided into two gen eral classes, freight and passenger. In heavy freight work, a locomotive is required to exert a high tractive force at comparatively slow speed, while in fast passenger work the tractive force, when running, is comparatively low, while the speed is high. Horse-power is measured by the product of tractive force and speed, hence it is frequently necessary for a passenger locomotive to develop as much horse-power as a freight, even though the trac tive forces exerted by the two may be widely differ ent. As the boiler capacity limits the horse-power, it follows that in proportion to the tractive force exerted, a passenger locomotive needs a larger boiler than one intended for freight service. The requirements of fast freight and heavy, medium speed passenger service are more nearly alike, and the same type of locomotive can frequently be used for both these classes of work.
