Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flowering Plant: As Illustrating the First Principles of Botany The present work has been written with the intention of illustrating the First Principles Of Botany by means of common Flowering Plants. NO previous knowledge is assumed, and the style is made as simple as possible, the technical terms necessary being carefully explained as they occur. The paramount importance Of Practical Work is insisted on throughout, and, wherever possible, easily Obtained Objects are described instead of rare ones, so that the student can readily verify most Of the facts mentioned. A short Practical Appendix is also added. No attempt has been made to write up (or down to any syllabus, but it is believed that the book will meet the requirements of most Elementary Examinations in Botany. A selection Of South Kensington and London Questions has been appended. My best thanks are due to Professor J. Von Sachs for permission to use several figures; and also to my friend and former colleague, Mr. John Brill, m.a., who has given me much kind help during the progress of the work. Any corrections or suggestions for improvement will be gladly received. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Botany Principles and Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Botany Principles and Problems Classic Reprint written by Edmund Ware Sinnott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany, Principles and Problems The present volume, an outgrowth Of experience in presenting to college freshmen a course in elementary botany, endeavors to set forth somewhat briefly and concisely the more important facts concerning the morphology, physiology and classification of plants, and to provide a body Of problem material which may be of assistance in stimulating thought and in promoting class discussion. The consideration of structure and function in the earlier portions of the book is confined mainly to the seed plants, and the distinctive characteristics Of the other members of the plant kingdom are discussed in the last five chapters. Should the course be too brief to take up these groups in detail, Chapter XIII, which deals with the main events in the history of the plant kingdom and the important features of its various divisions, may perhaps be used to give the student an idea of the kingdom as a whole. In view Of the importance of the soil in the life Of plants, and in order to emphasize the fact that living things cannot be understood without a knowledge of their environment, an early chapter is devoted entirely to the soil itself. The increased interest in matters pertaining to inheritance has war ranted a special chapter on heredity and variation; and a chapter is also devoted to organic evolution, emphasizing its botanical aspects. The chapters have been so written as to be separately understandable and may readily be taken up in some other order than that in which thev are here presented. The text is not primarily designed for agricultural students but many of the questions naturally involve a practical application of botanical principles and will perhaps commend themselves especially to those whose interest in botany is chiefly agricultural. Download or read book The Essentials of Botany Classic Reprint written by Charles E. Bessey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Botany In the use of this book I must urge that it is intended to serve as a guide only to the teacher and student. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen. Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint written by Joseph Y. Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany It will be found that this book differs from most American text-books designed for use in secondary schools, in endeavor ing to combine in one volume the simplest possible directions for laboratory work with an outline of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and a brief statement of the principles of botani cal classification. An account of the functions of the tissues or organs described usually follows as closely as may be the account of the parts in question. The attempt is made to disciiss' plants dynamically rather than statically, to view them as contestants in the struggle for existence, and to con sider some of the conditions of success and failure in the vegetable world. While the determination of species by means of an artifical key is illustrated, preparation for this process is by no means the main object or even a principal end which the author has had in view. The tendency of botany-teaching seems to be more and more away from the old ideal of enabling one's pupils to run down a species as expeditiously as possible, and teaching them how to preserve a properly ticketed memento of the chase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Botany I have begun with what is called organography (book I or an explanation of the exact structure of plants; abranch of the subject which comprehends all that relates either to the various forms of tissue of which vegetables are constructed, or to the external appearance their elementary organs assume in a state of combination. It is exceedingly desirable that these topics should be well understood, because they form the basis of all other parts of the science. In physiology, every function is executed through the agency of the organs: systematic arrangements de pend upon characters arising out of their consider ation; and descriptive Botany can have no logical precision without the principles of Organography are first exactly settled. A difference of Opinion exists among the most distinguished botanists, upon some points connected with this subject, so that it has been found expedient to enter occasionally'into much detail, for the purpose of' satisfying the student of' the accuracy of' the facts and reasonings upon which he is expected to rely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Practical Instruction in Botany A chapter has been devoted to the Characeae, which were entirely omitted in previous editions; various subsidiary types have been introduced here and there in the text in small print, with a view to extending the course beyond the dangerously narrow limits of pure type-teaching. These and other alterations have been made in response to the remarks and suggestions of critics and friends, to Whom I take this opportunity of expressing my obligation. Book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Oran Raber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Relations: A First Book of Botany 1. General relations - Plants form the natural covering of the earth's surface. So generally is this true that a land surface without plants seems remarkable. Not only do plants cover the land, but they abound in waters as well, both fresh and salt waters. They are wonderfully varied in size, ranging from huge trees to forms so minute that the microscope must be used to discover them. They are also exceedingly variable in form, as may be seen by comparing trees, lilies, ferns, mosses, mushrooms, lichens, and the green thready growths (algae) found in water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of College Botany Again, it was formerly the very general practice of teachers to present the subject of plant study beginning with the higher plants, and indeed devoting the far greater time to them, so that the sequence was from the higher to the lower forms. However, with the more complete acceptance of the doctrine of evolution the opposite sequence from the lower forms to the higher has become the general rule, since it permits greater emphasis to be placed upon the progressive structural changes by which higher organisms have been evolved from lower.
