Book Handbook of Research on Improving the Natural and Ecological Conditions of the Polesie Zone

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Improving the Natural and Ecological Conditions of the Polesie Zone written by Rokochinskiy, Anatoliy and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wetlands of the Polish Polissya zone in previous centuries had a negative impact on the economic development of the region and were an obstacle to social transformation. Even in ancient times, humans were aware of the need for drainage measures, as evidenced by archaeological excavations and traces of preserved reclamation works dating back a thousand years. Unfortunately, little has survived testifying to the scale of hydro melioration until the second half of the 18th century. The Handbook of Research on Improving the Natural and Ecological Conditions of the Polesie Zone considers the results of many years of research and the production experience of leading scientists and specialists of the water management and melioration profile regarding natural, historical, social, economic, constructive, regime-technological, ecological, economic, and other aspects of land reclamation and development of the Polissya zone. Covering key topics such as water treatment, ecology, nature conservation, and environmental science, this premier reference source is ideal for industry professionals, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Download or read book Water Reuse written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book Decentralized Water Reclamation Engineering

Download or read book Decentralized Water Reclamation Engineering written by Robert L. Siegrist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents technical information and materials concerning the engineering of decentralized infrastructure to achieve effective wastewater treatment while also minimizing resource consumption and providing a source of reclaimed water, nutrients and organic matter. The approaches, technologies and systems described are targeted for green building and sustainable infrastructure across the United States and similar industrialized nations, but they are also applicable to water and sanitation projects in developing regions around the world. Today, decentralized infrastructure can be used to sustainably serve houses, buildings and developments with water use and wastewater flows of 100 to 100,000 gal/d or more. The book provides in-depth engineering coverage of the subject in a narrative and slide format specifically designed for classroom lectures or facilitated self-study. Key topics are covered including: engineering to satisfy project goals and requirements including sustainability, contemporary water use and wastewater generation and methods to achieve water use efficiency and source separation, alternative methods of wastewater collection and conveyance, and treatment and reuse operations including tank-based (e.g., septic tanks, aerobic treatment units, porous media biofilters, membrane bioreactors), wetland-based (e.g., free water surface and vegetated subsurface bed wetlands), and land-based unit operations (e.g., subsurface soil infiltration, shallow drip dispersal). Approaches and technologies are also presented that can achieve nutrient reduction and resource recovery in some cases or pathogen destruction to enable a particular discharge or reuse plan. The book also describes requirements and methods for effective management of the process solids, sludges and residuals that can be generated by various approaches, technologies, and systems. The book contains over 300 figures and illustrations of technologies and systems and over 150 tables of design and performance data. There are also more than 200 questions and problems relevant to the topics covered including example problems that have solutions presented to illustrate engineering concepts and calculations.

Book Hints From a Practical Farmer

Download or read book Hints From a Practical Farmer written by I. D. O'donnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints From a Practical Farmer: To the Settlers on the Projects of the United States Reclamation Service The advancement of the interests of the farmers in any country depends upon the adoption and the application of the principles of the formulæ - better business, better farming, and better living. I put the formulæ in the order of their ranking importance. We are investing millions of dollars in teaching the science of better farming; we are seeking the means of better living for the farmer, but to realize the benefits of better farming and better living we must be religious in our efforts to instill in the minds of the American farmers the necessity for and the means of acquiring and applying the principles of better business. The science of better farming and the plans for better living will not avail unless the foundation - better business - is carefully ingrained in our scheme of agriculture. Before the days of our excellent transportation facilities each farming community could control its markets and general business by the application of a very simple system - of exchange, sale, and purchase. Since the advent of good transportation facilities no agricultural community in this country is independent of any other section of the country or of the world in general. Prices for our products are fixed by the prices available in the large business centers and our markets are open to invasion by farmers from other sections who can produce our products more cheaply and better in quality. Better business on the farm reaches into every item of farm life. The layout of the farm with its buildings and fields should be planned as a manufacturing plant is planned - for efficiency. The rotation of crops to be followed should be planned with an eye to definite maximum results; the breeds of live stock to be handled should be chosen on the basis of potential profits; the community spirit, or the association with fellow farmers, should be fostered in a businesslike manner because it is good business; communication with the general business world - or what is generally known as boosting - should be done aggressively by the farmers, for good boosting is good business. Book Crop Production in Salt Affected Soils

Download or read book Crop Production in Salt Affected Soils written by I.C. Gupta and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course work for various degree programs are constantly revised and or new courses added so that the future teachers, researches and planners are able to face the new emerging challenges. The environmental concerns of irrigated agriculture in the form of water logging and soil salinity are expanding and impacting food grains production. These challenges are commonly articulated at various forums. Thus, reclamation, management and crop production practices of waterlogged salt affected soils have been introduced as a subject in agricultural and agricultural engineering colleges. Since there is a general lack of a good textbook on this subject, authors have attempted to fill this gap through the current publication titled `Crop Production in Salt Affected Soils´. It comprehensively deals with the fundamentals of land reclamation principles and crop production practices. It has been divided into 16 Chapters. The book begins with general introduction comprising of categorization of salt affected soils, extent and distribution and nature and physical, chemical and biological properties. Other chapters includes basic information on on-farm land development, hydrology, irrigation practices, drainage methods, leaching, soil salinization, chemical amendments, and new innovative techniques including agronomic and cultural practices related to land reclamation. Crop production practices for select cereal, oil seeds, sugar, fiber and forage, green manure crops, grasses and forest plantations are also included. Chapter sixteen covers the economic evaluation and social issues involved in land reclamation programs. A Glossary of terms has been added for quick overview of the terms used in the book. The textbook designed and developed for the undergraduate/post graduate students of agricultural/agricultural engineering has been profusely illustrated so that students are able to visualize the processes and phenomena being dealt with. Besides serving as a text book, it will prove to be a handy resource book to conduct specialized training programs on land reclamation. We believe that the book will find its due place in the shelves of students and teachers, field functionaries and college libraries of state agricultural universities and civil engineering colleges.
