Book Essentials of Medical Ultrasound

Download or read book Essentials of Medical Ultrasound written by Michael H. Repacholi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first applications of ultrasound was in submarine sonar equip ment. Since then ultrasound has found increasing applications, particularly in industry, but increasingly in biomedicine. For many years ultrasound has been used in physical therapy, although only in the past decade or two has it evolved from laboratory curiosity to a well-established diagnostic imaging modality. Ultrasound is now a widely accepted, indeed pervasive, diagnos tic and therapeutic tool in the medical field, and its applications are increasing rapidly. Our intent in developing this book is to provide a coherent tutorial intro duction to the field of medical ultrasound at a level suitable for those en tering the area from either medical or scientific backgrounds. The topics discussed should be of interest to nearly all medical and health care per sonnel needing to understand or operate ultrasonic devices, including clini cians, medical technicians, physiotherapists, medical physicists, and other biomedical scientists interested in the field. The book opens with a description of the basic principles of propagating acoustic waves, explains how they interact with a wide range of biological systems, and outlines the effects they produce. To provide practical infor mation to operators of ultrasound equipment, we have included thorough coverage of the details of ultrasonic instrumentation and measurement techniques, and set forth the framework for an effective quality assurance program.

Book Physical Principles of Ultrasonic Technology

Download or read book Physical Principles of Ultrasonic Technology written by L. Rozenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973-09 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third work in a series of monographs* written by a col lective group of authors and is devoted to the physical mechanisms of specific ultrasonic technological processes that have already come into general use, as well as those which have just begun to enjoy practical applications. The problems covered in the book are exceedingly important insofar as the understanding of the phys ical mechanisms of ultrasonic processes forms the solitary basis of an intelligent approach to the design of industrial equipment and proper choice of optimum working conditions. The purely em pirical approach to the solution of these problems does not afford satisfactory results, because the state of affairs in a high-inten sity acoustic field is complex and diversified. Many papers in the Soviet Union and abroad have been con cerned with the practical utilization of ultrasound, but the over whelming majority is limited to the solution of highly individual ized practical problems, usually under conditions that are not amenable to comparison. Systematic studies have been initiated in the Ultrasonics Section of the Acoustics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR on the physics of high-intensity ultrasonic waves and their effects on matter; the results of these studies form the basis of the present book.

Book Physical Principles of Ultrasonic Technology

Download or read book Physical Principles of Ultrasonic Technology written by L. Rozenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973-09 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the action of acoustic vibrations a liquid is converted into the aerosol state at the interface between a gaseous and a liq uid medium. Acoustic energy can be delivered to the atomization zone either on the liquid side or on the gas side. Ordinarily, when acoustic energy is delivered through the gas, the atomization of the liquid is realized by sonic and low-frequency ultrasonic vibra tions because high-frequency ultrasound is rapidly damped in prop agation through gases. But if the acoustic energy is delivered through the liquid, whose damping factor is orders of magnitude smaller than in gases, atomization can be realized by sonic, low frequency ultrasonic, or high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations. The following is a convenient classification of methods for the ultra sonic atomization of a liquid: 1. atomization of the liquid with the transmission of acoustic energy to the working zone through the liquid: a. atomization in a layer; b. atomization in a fountain; 2. atomization of the liquid with the transmission of acoustic energy to the working zone through the gas. 3 Chapter 1 Acoustic Atomization of Liquids The atomization of liquids by ultrasound (at a frequency of 300 kHz) was discovered in the classical studies of Wood and Loomis [1]. The first experimental investigation of the physical nature of the 8tomization of a liquid by ultrasound was conducted by Sollner [2].
