Les êtres qui constituent l’univers et les phénomènes dont il est le théâtre — corps célestes, terre qui nous porte, éléments contenus dans son sein, animaux et végétaux qui peuplent sa surface — voilà autant d’objets de sciences distinctes qui s’appellent les sciences physiques et naturelles. Mais dans ce vaste monde, il y a d’autres objets bien dignes de notre élude, ce sont les hommes eux-mêmes vivant en société : ils ne sauraient vivre autrement. Les rapports qu’ils soutiennent entre eux et les phénomènes dont ces sociétés sont le théâtre, forment l’objet d’un autre groupe de sciences qui s’appellent les sciences sociales.
