Book Principalities and Powers A Study in Pauline Theology

Download or read book Principalities and Powers A Study in Pauline Theology written by G. B. Caird and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has been undertaken on the assumption that when Paul spoke of principalities, authorities, powers, world-rulers, and elemental spirits, he was using mythological language to describe spiritual realities with which he and his fellow Christians had personal acquaintance. The first three chapters trace the history of three Jewish beliefs which contribute to Paul's theology: that God had set the pagan world under the authority of angelic governors, that the Law was given and guarded by angels, whose history strangely resembles that of Satan, and that the powers of nature are not entirely subservient to God's sovereignty. In each case the powers represent a divine authority corrupted by human sin. The last chapter attempts to show how Paul envisaged the cross as a victory over the powers.

Book excerpt: The evil that afflicts our lives often leaves us confused and directionless, wounded and powerless. How should we respond to evil's power to assault us? How can we understand God's work in a world that seems all too often to be permeated with evil? Narrating her own wrestling with evil as well as engaging in biblical and philosophical analysis, biblical scholar Ingrid Faro explores the many dimensions to evil. Soberly honest, biblically engaged, and theologically nuanced, Demystifying Evil examines the power of evil to disrupt and fragment our lives and tempt us to collude with it. But evil does not have the last word. Faro takes us on a journey into the book of Genesis, the Ancient Near East culture, the cross, and her own story of suffering to engage the undoing of evil.

Book Angels of Light Powers of Darkness

Download or read book Angels of Light Powers of Darkness written by Stephen Noll and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-04-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have brought an unexpected revival of popular interest in angels. Books professing to draw back the curtain on the unseen angelic world filled entire bookstore shelves. Here, as if to mock the cold universe of modernity, were the stories of numerous and warm encounters with angelic beings. But who are angels, and what is their nature and purpose in the biblical scheme of things? Are the biblical stories to be taken literally or symbolically, or should they be relegated to another day and age? How have the great theologians of the church regarded the angels? And most important, what are the nature and role of angels in God's cosmos and his redemptive plan? Stephen Noll answers these questions in this detailed exploration of angels in the tapestry of Scripture. Here is a biblical-theological study of angels, Satan and the powers that fills a significant gap and will command the attention of serious students of scripture.

A twenty-year undertaking, this project is a series of interconnected investigations of staggering ambition and scope investigating the deepest foundations of every major Western institution and discourse. This single book brings together for the first time all nine volumes that make up this groundbreaking project. Each volume takes a seemingly obscure and outdated issue as its starting point—an enigmatic figure in Roman law, or medieval debates about God's management of creation, or theories about the origin of the oath—but is always guided by questions with urgent contemporary relevance. The Omnibus Homo Sacer includes: 1.Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life 2.1.State of Exception 2.2.Stasis: Civil War as a Political Paradigm 2.3.The Sacrament of Language: An Archeology of the Oath 2.4.The Kingdom and the Glory: For a Theological Genealogy of Economy and Glory 2.5.Opus Dei: An Archeology of Duty 3.Remnants of Auschwitz: The Witness and the Archive 4.1.The Highest Poverty: Monastic Rules and Form-of-Life 4.2.The Use of Bodies

Book The New Orthodoxy

Download or read book The New Orthodoxy written by Bruce J Clemenger and published by Castle Quay Books. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the founding non-sectarian approach to Canadian statecraft that accommodated religious and cultural diversity. The 1960’s promise of political liberalism embraced in Canada was to provide a philosophy of government that facilitates the individual's vision and pursuit of the good life. Decades later, the promotion of individual autonomy and fraternity by governments and the courts threatens to undermine the very freedom governments claim to promote and protect. Bruce J. Clemenger presents a biblically-based model of public and political engagement and a defense of religious freedom, especially the freedom to disagree, in an increasingly secularist state. A timely work.

Book Angels

Book excerpt: In the 1990s alone, more than 400 works on angels have been published, adding to an already burgeoning genre. Throughout the centuries angels have been featured in, among others, theological works on scripture; studies in comparative religions; works on art, architecture and music; philosophical, sociological, anthropological, archeological and psychological works; and even a book length psychoanalytical study of the implications that our understanding of angels has for our understanding of sexual differences. Access to the multitude of angelic works is simplified with this bibliography, which lists 4,355 works, arranged alphabetically by author. Each entry contains a source for the reference, often a Library of Congress call number followed by the name of a university that holds the work. Key words pertaining to the works are included when available, and over 750 of the entries are annotated. Extensive indexes to names, subjects and centuries provide further utility.
