Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of positive board/superintendent relationships cannot be understated. The need to balance competing political pressures to create the best possible learning opportunities for students is ever present. Most importantly, board/superintendent relationships should be cultivated with openness and transparency among each other and the public. This book is a resource for both board members and superintendents, and explores issues related to the board/superintendent relationship and superintendent hiring practices. The book includes contributions from experienced and new superintendents and board members on a wide range of topics that boards and superintendents must navigate together successfully in order to move districts in a positive direction for students, staff, parents, and communities. This book is unique in that the intended audience is both boards and superintendents. It is not a resource wherein “experts” tell board members how they should conduct board business, nor a resource that informs superintendents how to “manage” school boards. Instead, the book promotes and encourages a productive working relationship and partnership that moves school districts forward in a positive manner.

Book The Superintendent principal Relationship and Its Influence on Leadership Practices for the Urban Elementary Principal and the Urban Superintendent

Download or read book The Superintendent principal Relationship and Its Influence on Leadership Practices for the Urban Elementary Principal and the Urban Superintendent written by Melissa A. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superintendents and principals are the parties that carry the responsibility of effective leadership practices in today's schools (Razik & Swanson, 2010; Fullan, 2001; Fullan; 2005; Kowalski, 2006; Leithwood & Jantzi, 2000). In order to determine the practices, behaviors, and characteristics of effective leadership that lead to the ultimate goal of student achievement, researchers continue to study leadership practices. One model of effective leadership practices is transformational leadership which unites the leader and follower in a common, organizational goal which is supported by the characteristics of trust, empowerment, vision, and charisma (Carlson, 1996; Leithwood & Jantzi, 2000; Razik & Swanson, 2010; Yukl, 2010). The purpose of this study was to uncover how the interaction of two important leaders, the superintendent and the elementary principal, influence the leadership practices for both parties. For this qualitative study, three urban, elementary principals and three urban superintendents were interviewed about their leadership practices. Additionally, participants provided archival documents that represented superintendent-principal interactions. Through the analysis, four different themes were common to the superintendents and principals including leadership practices, urban contexts, transformational leadership behaviors, and superintendent-principal interactions.

Book The Lived Experience of Suburban Superintendents and Elementary School Principals Relationships in Respect to School Leadership

Download or read book The Lived Experience of Suburban Superintendents and Elementary School Principals Relationships in Respect to School Leadership written by Wade P. Labatte and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused is on the lived experience among superintendents, who had less than five years in their current position, and suburban elementary school principals regarding their relationship in respect to school leadership. Examining the superintendent and elementary principal relationship is an essential component of understanding how leadership is influenced by specific relationships, namely the relationship of a suburban superintendent and an elementary principal. Although there is some research on the relationship between a superintendent and principal in an urban secondary level setting, very little research exists on the relationship between the two leaders at the suburban, elementary school level. Therefore, a qualitative study was designed using the phenomenological approach to discover the dynamics of this phenomenon. Participants of this study included licensed elementary school principals and licensed superintendents, who had less than five years in their current superintendent position, in five suburban school districts in a state in the upper Midwest. Six themes were uncovered during the interview process that indicated six aspects of the relationship between suburban superintendents and elementary school principals leadership: reciprocal modeling required adaptability for improvement, trust was the cornerstone to relationship bonds, intentionality and connections led to positive relationships, leadership characteristics prevailed over leadership styles, leadership relationships relied on all forms of communication, and working together improved the knowledge of leadership realities. The lived experience of the suburban superintendents and elementary school principals provided a window into the complexities of a working relationship in regards to leadership. The findings illustrated how relationships are dependent on what is expected, what is learned, and how to adapt to situations and people.

Book A Study of what High School Principals Need from Their Superintendents

Download or read book A Study of what High School Principals Need from Their Superintendents written by Stephanie D. Howard and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this multi-case study was to explore the mutual needs and expectations of West Texas high school principals and their superintendents. In addition, the study examines ways in which these principals interact with and perceive their relationships with and support from their superintendents. Concepts from West and Derrington's (2009) Leadership Teaming was used to evaluate the relationship between the superintendent and principal. For the purpose of this study, high schools were classified by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). This research was conducted using a qualitative research design through a multi-case study. The participants consisted of five West Texas high school principals and their superintendents. Five principals, representing three school districts, and their superintendents were selected. Data were collected using interviews, participant observations, and written documents. In this study, stories from the participants tells us about themselves, their principalship, and their working relationship with their superintendents. After the initial interview with the principal participants, the researcher interviewed the superintendent. The principal and superintendent were then observed in a principal-superintendent meeting. Two protocols were used to gather insight and information relevant to the research questions. An observation protocol was used to categorize the observations into themes related to the researcher's conceptual framework. The researcher found that while the role of a high school principal is very demanding, the principals love what they do. The superintendents in this study realize the importance and significance of the principal's role at their high schools. They explained that is the most significant and most high profile position in their districts. Each of the principals found ways to deal with the challenges of the high school principalship. It was evident that principals need the opportunity to provide input, collaborate on topics before decisions are made, and they need for the superintendent to value their work, their expertise, and their input. Principals were quick to identify what they need from their superintendents. The most common answer was related to professional courtesy. They described professional courtesy as having the opportunity to provide input, for the superintendent to value their input and consider their knowledge, expertise, and on the ground experience. The next thing they explained they needed from their superintendents is a superintendent who will listen to them. They want to work for someone who values their opinions, listens to their input, and takes the appropriate steps to supporting that input when appropriate. In addition, it became evident throughout the research that trust was essential to the principal-superintendent relationship. When a positive demeanor was held by the superintendent, the principals exhibited a more positive approach and outlook on the challenges of the position.
