Book Sino Tibetan

Download or read book Sino Tibetan written by Paul K. Benedict and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-06-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the Sino-Tibetan, a language stock comparable in size and diversification to Indo-European and comprising Chinese, Karen and over a hundred Tibetan-Burman languages. Dr Benedict presents a systematic analysis of the morphology and phonology of the main descendants of the stock, traces their family relationships and reconstructs in outline the parent language, Sino-Tibetan. There is a glossary of Tibeto-Burman index, which should prove of especial value as a working tool for scholars. Although the book was first drafted many years ago, Dr Benedict made extensive annotations on the original manuscript and Professor James A. Matisoff added many notes on bibliography and the Burmese-Lolo group of languages. The scope and original theses of the work, however, remain unaltered and the editors present it as a major and original contribution to the study of oriental linguistics.

Book Acoustical Studies of Mandarin Vowels and Tones

Download or read book Acoustical Studies of Mandarin Vowels and Tones written by John Marshall Howie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, the sixth book in the Princeton-Cambridge Studies in Chinese Linguistics series was one of the first in any language to apply the techniques of acoustic phonetics to Mandarin Chinese. The present volume describes the acoustic cues for the perception of nine vowels and four tones (that is, patterns of voice pitch that serve to distinguish words). The description is based on an analysis of the speech of one male speaker of the Peking dialect, the results of which were used to determine the dimensions of a set of synthetic vowels and tones. In a series of perception tests these synthetic speech samples were presented to a group of twelve Mandarin speakers for identification with Mandarin characters. The series represents a systematic and highly detailed linguistic analysis of the Chinese languages. It provides a sophisticated working-tool and a comprehensive library of reference.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Chinese Linguistics

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Chinese Linguistics written by Chu-Ren Huang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linguistic study of Chinese, with its rich morphological, syntactic and prosodic/tonal structures, its complex writing system, and its diverse socio-historical background, is already a long-established and vast research area. With contributions from internationally renowned experts in the field, this Handbook provides a state-of-the-art survey of the central issues in Chinese linguistics. Chapters are divided into four thematic areas: writing systems and the neuro-cognitive processing of Chinese, morpho-lexical structures, phonetic and phonological characteristics, and issues in syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse. By following a context-driven approach, it shows how theoretical issues in Chinese linguistics can be resolved with empirical evidence and argumentation, and provides a range of different perspectives. Its dialectical design sets a state-of-the-art benchmark for research in a wide range of interdisciplinary and cross-lingual studies involving the Chinese language. It is an essential resource for students and researchers wishing to explore the fascinating field of Chinese linguistics.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Linguistics written by William S-Y Wang and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Linguistics offers a broad and comprehensive coverage of the entire field from a multi-disciplinary perspective. All chapters are contributed by leading scholars in their respective areas. This Handbook contains eight sections: history, languages and dialects, language contact, morphology, syntax, phonetics and phonology, socio-cultural aspects and neuro-psychological aspects. It provides not only a diachronic view of how languages evolve, but also a synchronic view of how languages in contact enrich each other by borrowing new words, calquing loan translation and even developing new syntactic structures. It also accompanies traditional linguistic studies of grammar and phonology with empirical evidence from psychology and neurocognitive sciences. In addition to research on the Chinese language and its major dialect groups, this handbook covers studies on sign languages and non-Chinese languages, such as the Austronesian languages spoken in Taiwan.
