Book excerpt: Oppositional Voices is a study of six women writers in the late Elizabethan period, who, ignoring Renaissance society's injunction that women should confine themselves to religious compositions, wrote and translated poetry, drama and romantic fiction. Tina Krontiris brings together their work, including at times their voiced opposition to certain oppressive ideas and stereotypes. Rather than simply glorify these voices, her study subtly probes the influence of a culture inimical to female creative activity on the writings of these women.

Book Margaret Tyler Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood

Download or read book Margaret Tyler Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood written by Joyce Boro and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Tyler's Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood is a groundbreaking work, being the first English romance penned by a woman and the first English romance to be translated directly from Spanish. As such it is not only a landmark in the history of Anglo-Spanish literary relations, but it is also a milestone in the evolution of the romance genre and in the development of women's writing in England. Yet notwithstanding its seminal status, this is the only critical edition of Tyler's romance. This modernized edition is preceded by an introduction which meticulously investigates Tyler's translation methodology, her biography, her proto-feminism, and her religious affiliations. In addition, it situates Mirror within the context of English romance production and reading, female authorship, and the Elizabethan and Jacobean translation of Spanish romance. This edition will be of interest to scholars of gender studies and of English and Spanish Renaissance literature.

  • Publisher : Chicago Review Press
  • Release : 2013-08-01
  • ISBN : 1613740123
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book First Class written by Alison Stewart and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining a fascinating history of the first U.S. high school for African Americans with an unflinching analysis of urban public-school education today, First Class explores an underrepresented and largely unknown aspect of black history while opening a discussion on what it takes to make a public school successful. In 1870, in the wake of the Civil War, citizens of Washington, DC, opened the Preparatory High School for Colored Youth, the first black public high school in the United States; it would later be renamed Dunbar High and would flourish despite Jim Crow laws and segregation. Dunbar attracted an extraordinary faculty: its early principal was the first black graduate of Harvard, and at a time it had seven teachers with PhDs, a medical doctor, and a lawyer. During the school's first 80 years, these teachers would develop generations of highly educated, successful African Americans, and at its height in the 1940s and '50s, Dunbar High School sent 80 percent of its students to college. Today, as in too many failing urban public schools, the majority of Dunbar students are barely proficient in reading and math. Journalist and author Alison Stewart—whose parents were both Dunbar graduates—tells the story of the school's rise, fall, and possible resurgence as it looks to reopen its new, state-of-the-art campus in the fall of 2013.

Book What Stubborn Dragons Want

Download or read book What Stubborn Dragons Want written by Cristina Rayne and published by Fantastical Press. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, finding love is the easiest part. What's hard is when the government of your beloved says your love is illegal. Lillian Miller’s plans for her weekend are to attend her sister’s (illegal) wedding in Elysia South with her family, hang out in a dragon city she’s been dying to see, and try not to get caught doing any of that because setting foot in any Draknos kingdom is against the law. However, when their guide into the kingdom, Airon, a dragon shifter spy currently living covertly in Dallas begins to pursue her romantically, Lillian suddenly has more things to worry about than getting arrested. While she is certainly attracted, she absolutely doesn’t want to give up her life and friends in Dallas, something that would inevitably have to happen in the current political climate where dragon shifters are still thought of as beasts. She also doesn’t want Airon to give up his home to live as something he’s not, especially when evidence of dragon hunters surfaces. Can Lillian and Airon overcome what seems an unbreakable barrier of bureaucracy and xenophobia as well as their own personal hang-ups to find their happily ever after? Contains mature content, language, and hot dragon shifters. This is a complete story with no cliffhangers.
