Based on a tale from "One Thousand and One Nights", this beautifully-illustrated story is highly recommend for lovers of folklore and collectors of classic fairy tales. Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953) was a French-born British illustrator and stamp designer. He was born in Toulouse and studied law there, but later, realising that his true passion was illustration, studied art the École des Beaux-Arts. Having moved to London in the early 20th century, Dulac received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters in 1905. During the First World War, he illustrated relief books; and after the war, when children's books were in low demand, he began illustrating magazines. Other notable works containing Dulac's illustrations include: "The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales" (1910), "Stories from Hans Christian Andersen" (1911), and "The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe" (1912). Download or read book An Edmund Dulac Treasury written by Edmund Dulac and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in tales both ancient and modern, these vibrant images date from the early twentieth century's Golden Age of Illustration. Edmund Dulac, a prominent artist of the period, created them for books published between 1905 and 1928. Their moods range from the shadowy foreboding of Jane Eyre to the venturesome spirits of Treasure Island and the lighthearted fantasies of A Fairy Garland. Other featured titles include Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Arabian Nights, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. French-born Edmund Dulac arrived in London in 1904, when new advances in the printing process kindled a rage for picture books. Dulac's imaginative powers and technical skills assured the popularity of his book illustrations, many of which were sold separately as fine art paintings. After World War I, when the appetite for deluxe volumes waned, the artist turned his talents in many new directions, including portraiture, theatrical costume and set design, newspaper caricature, and stamp design. This retrospective of his early works is the only such anthology available, offering a singular tribute to an artist from a halcyon era of art inspired by literature.

This edition features a beautiful collection of the best of that art, taken from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Harry Clarke, Honor Appleton, Jennie Harbour, among others. This series of books celebrates the Golden Age of Illustration. During this period, the popularity, abundance and – most importantly – the unprecedented upsurge in the quality of illustrated works marked an astounding change in the way that publishers, artists and the general public came to view this hitherto insufficiently esteemed art form. The Golden Age of Illustration Series, has sourced the rare original editions of these books and reproduced the beautiful art work in order to build a unique collection of illustrated fairy tales. ‘The Red Shoes’ was first published in April of 1845, as part of Andersen’s New Fairy Tales: First Volume, Third Collection. Andersen explained the source of the story as being an incident he had witnessed as a small child. His father, he stated, had been sent a piece of red silk by a rich lady, who wanted the material converted into a pair of dancing slippers. Andersen’s father produced the slippers, but the rich woman was horrified at the result, and in reaction to her harsh criticism, he cut the shoes up in front of her.
