Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the noble Arenberg family presented in an accessible and attractive way for the general public. From its origins in medieval times to the present day, the Arenberg family has been one of Europe’s leading noble families. With origins in the German Eifel region, the Arenbergs became sovereign Princes and later Dukes in the Holy Roman Empire. Their ranks included active officers on many battlefields, important decision makers, and cunning diplomats in the Low Countries, France, and Germany. This book relates the history of this still important and influential noble family and shows how the Dukes of Arenberg have maintained their position in the highest echelons of society throughout the ages. Richly illustrated with numerous paintings, photographs and colour drawings from the family’s well-preserved archives, The Dukes of Arenberg offers the reader not only the military and political history of the Arenberg family, but also an overview of more than a thousand years of European history, in which they have often played an important role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Norway - From Brutal Battle of World War II To Present Day Most of Scandinavia has been covered by ice at least three times, and the last ice melted about 14,000 years ago. The first traces of man in Norway dates back to sometime after 10,000 BC and they came both from the South and the North East. The Viking Age (793-1066 AD) For more than three centuries, the Vikings voyaged and invaded neighboring countries. Little by little they acquired national identities and became Swedes, Danes and Norwegians. Local chieftains were administrating their own areas of the country until Harald Hårfagre united Norway into one kingdom and became the first king around 885. The fundamental element for the Vikings was the ships, the instrument and symbol of Viking expansion. Due to the exceptional qualities and navigational skills, they spread across Europe, down the Caspian Sea, to Greenland and Iceland, and in the year 1000 to North America, where Leif Eriksson reached the American continent – about five hundred years earlier than Christopher Columbus. At that time Norway became a Christian country and the ruling king oppressed the Viking religion, but many people continued to hold on to the old beliefs. Traces of this Nordic mythology can still be seen in the names of the days of the week and in Norwegian holiday celebrations. To be continued... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold day on the thirtieth of January 1649 in London, an anonymous executioner severed the head of King Charles I of England. The watching crowds had very mixed feelings about this regicide, but Oliver Cromwell’s troops kept order, and eventually the crowd dispersed, stunned by this momentous event in English history, which left the country in turmoil. Amongst the crowd that day were a father of fifty-nine years and his three sons. This moment in history was to change their lives. Who were this family? Where had they come from? What would become of them? The answer to these questions would lead us back to King Robert the Bruce of Scotland, forward to our own Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and would also greatly influence much of American history.
