Book The Joy of the Gospel

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: In its painting and sculpture since 1920, African art has combined elements from traditional tribal and modern European art. This book traces this development. Concentrating on the period from 1920 to 1965, the author discusses specific style motifs, as well as ways of handling sculptural forms and surfaces, most of which are drawn from older art. He then shows how this substratum has been shaped by the techniques, media, styles and philosophy of the West. A new introduction by the author describes and assesses current trends in African art.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume on mission and unity is to bring to public attention a broad overview of the history, development, and perspectives of the role of mission in the pursuit of unity and the central biblical focus on unity as a prerequisite for an authentic witness in mission. The volume raises concrete questions: If the churches can agree on unity for mission, then does this visible unity go any further than the mutuality, partnership, collaboration, and networking of the Edinburgh 2010 Common Call? Does the call to unity or communion imply common touchstones, structures, or ministries to serve the communion of churches in mission?

Book Sacramental Theology

  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book Sacramental Theology written by Herbert Vorgrimler and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both resistance to and renewed interest in the sacraments mark current theological thought. This work acknowledges human limitations of the sacraments but stresses that God's relationship to human beings cannot be other than sacramental." Sacramental structures and events constitute salvation history, and thus permeate all theology. What makes this sacramental view comprehensible is faith; faith is an indispensable precondition for a sacramental theology. Therefore, the author first demonstrates the preconditions of faith on which sacramental theology rests, and what place it holds within the whole of theology. Following this, he briefly presents the concept of sacraments and the history of that concept, the teachings of Church tradition on sacraments in general, and the basic features of a sacramental theology. Next, he explains from a theological perspective the traditional sacraments of the Catholic Church, including related topics such as indulgences and sacramentals.

Book Communion Ecclesiology

Download or read book Communion Ecclesiology written by Dennis M. Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this new study Dennis Doyle notes that scholars as diverse as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Edward Schillebeeckx have been quoted as saying that "communion ecclesiology" is the most basic way to characterize the nature of the church. Yet the term has often been caught up in the divide between left and right in a polarized church. Doyle shows that the notion of communion among God's people and between them and the triune God is a doctrine that allows for both solid, this-worldly community and a fundamental sense that the Church is essentially rooted in and convoked by God."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Catholic Invasion of China

Download or read book The Catholic Invasion of China written by D. E. Mungello and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of D. E. Mungello’s forty years of study on Sino-Western history, this book provides a compelling and nuanced history of Roman Catholicism in modern China. As the author vividly shows, when China declined into a two-century cycle of poverty, powerlessness, and humiliation, the attitudes of Catholic missionaries became less accommodating than their famous Jesuit predecessors. He argues that “invasion” accurately characterizes the dominant attitude of Catholic missionaries (especially the French Jesuits) in their attempt to introduce Western religion and culture into China during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Elements of this attitude lingered until the end of the last century, when many Chinese felt that Pope John Paul II’s canonization of 120 martyrs reflected the imposition of an imperialist mentality. In this important work, Mungello corrects a major misreading of modern Chinese history by arguing that the growth of an indigenous Catholic church in the twentieth century transformed the negative aspects of the “invasion” into a positive Chinese religious force.

Book Toward a Theology of Inculturation

Download or read book Toward a Theology of Inculturation written by Aylward Shorter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Inculturation' is a word come only recently into theological language, having its origin and impetus in a revolution in the perception of Christian mission--even of Christian identity. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' is the first book to bring together the many strands of current and historical Catholic thought on what might be called a theology of a multicultural church. Inculturation, Shorter argues, is the recognition that faith must in effect become culture to be fully received and lived. In the course of a wide-ranging discussion, the author explores the intimate relationship between inculturation and theology, focusing in particular on scripture, the history of Òmissions (especially in Africa), and contemporary Catholic thought. Shorter concludes with an exploration of the future of the church--a multicultural church. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' offers a substantive explication of what inculturation is, what it is not, how and when it occurs, and what its limits are or should be.
