Book excerpt: Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (June 1599 – August 6 1660), known as Diego Vélasquez, was a painter of the Spanish Golden Age who had considerable influence at the court of King Philip IV. Along with Francisco Goya and Le Greco, he is generally considered to be one of the greatest artists in Spanish history. His style, whilst remaining very personal, belongs firmly in the Baroque movement. Velázquez’s two visits to Italy, evidenced by documents from that time, had a strong effect on the manner in which his work evolved. Besides numerous paintings with historical and cultural value, Diego Vélasquez painted numerous portraits of the Spanish Royal Family, other major European figures, and even of commoners. His artistic talent, according to general opinion, reached its peak in 1656 with the completion of Las Meninas, his great masterpiece. In the first quarter of the 19th century, Velázquez's style was taken as a model by Realist and Impressionist painters, in particular by Édouard Manet. Since then, further contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí have paid homage to their famous compatriot by recreating several of his most famous works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems surrounding the subject of distributed databases in real-time control were addressed at the workshop. The difficulties included finding new, high-level conceptual models as conventional solutions are rendered useless in distributed databases. The other problems covered include the difficulties faced due to huge transaction fluxes and time constraints. The papers cover these theoretical issues plus an applications section which provides case studies of efficient applied systems which will be important for the development of this essential field.

Download or read book Berio s Sequenzas written by JanetK. Halfyard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1958 and 2002, Luciano Berio wrote fourteen pieces entitled Sequenza, along with several versions of the same work for different instruments, revisions of the original pieces and also the parallel Chemins series, where one of the Sequenzas is used as the basis for a new composition on a larger scale. The Sequenza series is one of the most remarkable achievements of the late twentieth century - a collection of virtuoso pieces that explores the capabilities of a solo instrument and its player, making extreme technical demands of the performer whilst developing the musical vocabulary of the instrument in compositions so assured and so distinctive that each piece both initiates and potentially exhausts the repertoire of a new genre. The Sequenzas have significantly influenced the development of composition for solo instruments and voice, and there is no comparable series of works in the output of any other composer. Series of pieces tend to be linked by the instruments for which the composer writes, but this is a series in which the pieces are linked instead by the variety of instruments for which Berio composed. The varied approaches taken by the contributors in discussing the pieces demonstrate the richness of this repertoire and the many levels on which Berio and these landmark compositions can be considered. Contributions are arranged under three main headings: Performance Issues; Berio's Compositional Process and Aesthetics; and Analytical Approaches.

Book 60 YEARS OF GROWTH AND EXTRUSION

Download or read book 60 YEARS OF GROWTH AND EXTRUSION written by Hans Henrik Honnens de Lichtenberg and published by CorpMedia ApS. This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Primo turned 60 in 2019, the enterprise has become one of the largest extruders of custom-made plastic profiles in Europe, serving a wide range of industries. Primo’s anniversary is, however, also a celebration of the many companies that joined us along the way and have now become an integral part of the organisation. For the story of Primo is, to a high degree, the sum of the stories of the 28 businesses that joined us over the years. In that perspective, Primo is a far older company than the 60 years since its inception. In this anniversary book, we will celebrate the various companies and their approaches to plastic extrusion from the very beginning. In Denmark, Primo was one of the extrusion pioneers, but the companies acquired in Norway and Sweden were extruding even earlier – sometimes as the very first in their respective countries. We are telling their stories here along with Primo’s story, and we describe decade by decade how Primo has grown to become an international organisation.

Book After Words

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Leake
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 0802092799
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book After Words written by Elizabeth Leake and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Words investigates how the suicide of an author informs critical interpretations of the author's works. Suicide itself is a form of authorship as well as a revision, both on the part of the author, who has written his or her final scene and revised the `natural' course of his or her life, and on the part of the reader, who must make sense of this final act of writing. Elizabeth Leake focuses on twentieth-century Italian writers Guido Mor-selli, Amelia Rosselli, Cesare Pavese, and Primo Levi, examining personal correspondence, diaries, and obituaries along with popular and academic commemorative writings to elucidate the ramifications of the authors' suicides for their readership. She argues that authorial suicide points to the limitations of those critical stances that exclude the author from the practice of reading. In this innovative and accessible assessment of some of the key issues of authorship, Leake shows that in the aftermath of suicide, an author's life and death themselves become texts to be read.

Book Cervantes

  • Author : Dominick L. Finello
  • Publisher : Tamesis
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9781855660533
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Cervantes written by Dominick L. Finello and published by Tamesis. This book was released on 1998 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cervantes' work closely analysed for evidence of his attitude to academic life and to conversos, and his responses to technical challenges. A number of longstanding polemical issues related to Cervantes' life and creativity are closely examined here, throwing new light on his work as a whole. The book begins by exploring Cervantes' complex and ambivalent attitude towards academic life, which yielded comic portraits of students and many parodies of the academic tendencies of false praise, pedantry and pompousness. It goes on to consider the impact of the converso, or New Christian, on Spanish collective thinking, and Cervantes and Lope de Vega in particular; Old Christian versus New Christian rhetoric frequently determines the expression of such characters as Sancho Panza. An analysis of Cervantes' controversialinterpolation of stories in the first part of Don Quijote follows, and Professor Finello concludes by looking at the enigmatic discourse and dialogue of Don Quijote himself, elegant and harmonious despite the knight's apparent madness, arguing that since Quijote believes he is justified in imposing his chivalric values upon those who come into contact with him, he adjusts the situations in which he finds himself to the appropriate rhetoric of literary tradition. DOMINICK FINELLO is Professor of Spanish at Rider University.

Book The Metaphysics of Dante s Comedy

Download or read book The Metaphysics of Dante s Comedy written by Christian Moevs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recovery of Dante's metaphysics-which are very different from our own-is essential, argues Christian Moevs, if we are to resolve what has been called 'the central problem in the interpretation of the Comedy.' That problem is what to make of the Comedy's claim to the status of revelation, vision, or experiential record - as something more than imaginative literature. In this book Moevs offers the first sustained treatment of the metaphysical picture that grounds and motivates the Comedy, and the relation between those metaphysics and Dante's poetics. Moevs arrives at the radical conclusion that Dante believed that all of what we perceive as reality, the spatio-temporal world, is in fact a creation or projection of conscious being. Armed with this new understanding, Moevs is able to shed light on a series of perennial issues in the interpretation of the Comedy.
