It seems impossible that he could be so cruel, but so it was; he thrust him into prison till he should pay the debt. It is almost incredible, but Jesus says he went out and cast him into prison. This wasa s1rict and bitter justice to enact, nottobe approved by the merciful king. While the fellow-servant mourns in prison, retribution is preparing for the hard-hearted and unforgiving man that placed him there. The Lord was wroth to see his goodness and mercy so requited, and delivers the real transgressor to the tormentors, till he shall pay all and realize his sin., This is the narrative our blessed Lord gave to his listening disciples, and may all the house of Israel know assuredly. that herein lies a wonderful lesson that should sink deep into the heart of every circumcised child, belonging to the tribes of his inheritance. By this illustration he shows that mercy and forgiveness should rule in the hearts of his disciples, and be the polar star in his kingdom; and he concludes the narrative in these striking words: " So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts. forgive not every one his brother, their trespasses." There is no lesson more clearly and forcibly incu_lcated within the compass of God's book than that affection and kindness are to be the distinguishing features of his kingdom.
