Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Man Working upon these data, Prof. Croll asserts that the first of these periods of great eccentricity began years ago, and lasted years; the second began years Since and lasted years; the third commenced years ago and lasted years. This would give us, since the termination of the last glacial era (or eras), years. But it is certain that man of the river-drift period lived in pre-glacial times, and if we accept the conclusion that the most recent glacial era commenced years ago, we must allow not less than years ago as the date of the close of the Pliocene period, and the probable first appearance of man. Other theories which have been proposed to account for the Glacial Age, such as variations in the intensity Of solar radiation, the movement Of the earth from a colder into a warmer region of Space, alteration in the axis of the earth and others, are fully stated and criticized in the twelfth chapter of Sir John Lubbock's Prehistoric Man, as are also investigations into existing deposits and formations with a view to ascertaining the probable antiquity of the stone and bronze ages. Download or read book Primitive Man in Ohio Classic Reprint written by Warren K. Moorehead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Man in Ohio It is the purpose of our book to do away with certain of these illusions. In attempting this we are aware that a herculean task has been undertaken. But the time has arrived when men prefer facts to ights of fancy. We are therefore quite confident that our material, so carefully collected and thought fully weighed, Will not be cast aside and its place usurped by the rash statements of hasty and incom petent investigators. Why there should be so much speculation and uncertainty concerning the life of our aborigines is inexplicable to us. No question of equal importance could have been more easily deter mined had the early writers given as much care and patience to mound exploration as is given at the present time. Some writers have misrepresented and distort ed field testimony to uphold theories previously formed. As an illustration of this, and of the great damage that it has done, we need but call the atten tion of our readers to the famous Holy Stone of Newark. Book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint written by Joseph McCabe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man Few phases of the scientific doctrine of evolution have a greater fascination than the long story of the rise of man from his primitive level of stunted savagery to the fulness of modern civilisation. During a period of stupendous length man wandered over the earth without even the rudiments of culture. Our present knowledge puts the dawn of civilisation, in the valley of the Nile and on the heights above the valley of Mesopotamia, at about years ago. But man had then existed on this planet during a period which hardly any competent student would now estimate at less than years. In that long night preceding the dawn of history were slowly shaped the ideas and institutions from which civilisation would eventually issue. To trace the lines of this gradual rise, to restore the forms and the habits of the strange races of men who Spread over the planet, to indicate the causes of their progress or their halting on the upward path, is the aim of the present manual. Book Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario Classic Reprint written by David Boyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario As an introduction to the following notes on the ethnology and archaeology of Ontario it may not be inappropriate to devote a few pages to a consideration of the much discussed subject - Whence came the Indians? Not for the purpose of proposing any new theory, but simply to show the grounds on which claims are based by those who hold this, that, or the other view. It is tolerably safe to assert that the great majority of those who have given the subject any consideration at all, believe the American aborigines came from Asia, by way of Bering strait. A smaller number think the migration came along a more southerly course from Japan, and others still, that many found their way hither from islands of the Malaysian group to South America and Mexico. On the other hand claims have been set up for the opposite side of the Old World as the source of population. Of these, one that has attracted much attention is based on the fabled existence of the island Atlantis, between the coasts of Africa and America, and one of the latest theories refers to a former land-connection between northern Europe and Greenland, across which the origi nal discoverers of this continent found their way, Greenland itself being at that time a portion of our mainland. We all long at times for some Aladdin's lamp which shall enable us to thread our way through the fogs and mists with which time has shrouded the old story. The traditions of men have responded to this yearning in various ways, some allegorical and some prosaic; while in some, again, the too fantastic story has been worked over and made to look more reasonable by later hands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man in America Now the evolution of man from what Herbert Spencer terms a highly differentiated portion of the earth's crust and gaseous envelope, or what Dr. Theodore Nicholas (lill, Dean of American Biologists, calls a worm-like thing belonging to the earliest period of our earth's history, or his ascent from a prehistoric savage, is far front being a demonstrated fact. Will we admit, in the face of the philosophy of common sense, that these theories are, as Mr. Edward f'ludd claims, self-evident. Since then I have availed myself of further opportunities for study and research in reference both to existing races, and to the arts and monumental remains of extinct nations of the New \vorld. \vithin the same period important addi tions have been contributed to our knowledge not only of the arts, but of the physical characteristics of primeval man in Europe. Book The Skeletal Remains of Early Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Skeletal Remains of Early Man Classic Reprint written by Ale Hrdli Ka and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Skeletal Remains of Early Man Since 1916 a number of important new discoveries have been made; moreover, the writer, in the course of several additional trips to Europe, has examined personally, and in some cases repeatedly, the originals of both the older and the more recent discoveries. Also, notwithstanding the fact that many valuable contributions on the sub ject have appeared in print within the last decade, there is still to date no publication which deals with the ancient skeletal remains of man in any manner approaching completeness. In view of all this, and because of the many requests received for such a publication, it was felt that the preparation of a new and larger work should be under taken; and the present volume is the result. The principal aim of this book is to furnish accurate and, as far as possible, complete information on the earlier skeletal remains of man. If this object can be achieved, or even closely approached, then the publication should be one of permanent reference value, and further light on the problems involved, including further discoveries, may be dealt with in addenda.
