Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Egypt The art of Egypt, like all the rest of its civilisation, is the pro duct of the African soil. If it occasionally took ideas or methods of expression from the peoples with which it was brought into contact by the Pharaohs, its levies were not important enough in the first instance to exercise a durable influence upon its constitution. In a few years, it had so completely assimilated the substance of these as to leave us hardly sensible that any alien influences had interfered, even momentarily, with its ho mogeneity. It was only towards the end, when the race whose mind it had so admirably materialised and translated began to bow beneath the weight of over fifty centuries of existence, that it too declined, lacking strength to defend its superannuated traditions successfully against the new conceptions of beauty set before it by younger races. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Art in Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 The fact is that Schnaase follows a geographical order, which is very confusing in its results. To give but one example of its absurdity, he speaks of the Phoenicians before he has said a word of Egypt; now, we all know that the art of Tyre and Sidon was but a late reflection from that of Egypt; the work shops of those two famous ports were mere factories of cheap Egyptian art objects for exportation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of the Art of Ancient Egypt, 1895 Happily, year by year they are being slowly but surely amassed. None of the present generation can expect to trace the stream from its source to its termination. The task of exploration, however, affords keener enjoyment than the passage when the course is clear, and certainly the discoveries of late years have been such as must stir the coldest imagination. Up to the middle Of the present century it was generally believed that Egyptian art, through its long duration of many centuries, remained stationary, that the artists continued repeating the same forms. This notion was derived from the writings of the Greeks and Romans, probably echoing what they had heard from the priests and learned men of Egypt of their own day. Book History of Art in Primitive Greece Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book History of Art in Primitive Greece Vol 1 of 2 written by Georges Perrot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-27 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art in Primitive Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: Mycenian Art Since the beginning of the present century numerous monu ments have'been brought to light, old writings have been read and translated, chronologies have been discovered, thousands of inscriptions have been deciphered, and sculptures of the most varied kind have been exhumed, giving faithful portraitures of civilizations that had their being thousands of years before our era; ancient history, therefore, has had to be entirely te-written. There is scarcely a day, so to speak, that does not add to the knowledge we already possessed as to the frequent and intimate intercourse which Hellas entertained with those Eastern nations whose territories extended to her own borders, and who were in the enjoyment of a culture little inferior to that of Babylon and Egypt at an age when the Hellenes were still semi-savages. Accordingly, no Art-history of Greece can now be undertaken without reference to Oriental art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arts of Ancient Egypt: A Lecture Delivered Before the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts Another foreign Introductlon was the burlal of Slave images. In the tombs of the period of the Empire images are generally found, bearing in either hand a hoe, and with a basket on the back an inscription around them recording that they were to be vivified in the future state, and work for the deceased person, cultivating his fields with the hoes and carrying the earth in the basket. Now these figures, which are found by the hundred in the later times of the Empire, are absolutely unknown in the Old or Middle King dom before the Hyksos invasion, and the earliest examples, Dr. Birch thinks, may belong to the eighteenth dynasty: the beginning of the Empire. These figures are evidently cheap substitutes for Slaves immolated at the grave of their master, to accompany him to the future world, a sub stitution in the same Spirit as the use of paper dollars by the Chinese in their ancestral offerings. And when we think of the ghastly Scythic funerals described by Hero dotus, and consider that during historic times we know the Scythians to have made inroads in the'southern parts of Asia, we can hardly fail to regard this ceremonial slave burial appearing first after the Hyksos invasion, as another of the Asiatic ideas imported into Egypt, and perhaps adopted by the Hyksos originally from more northern tribes.
