Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Animals The study of the past is interesting for its own sake, and also for the doubtful rays of prophetic light it may throw into the obscurity of the future. This is my excuse for the last chapter, which is intended to apply some of the principal ideas gathered in the course of our argument to the present condition of mankind, to his future prospects and to the influence which he exerts upon other forms of life. The sources from which my facts have been gleaned are certainly many, but perhaps the leading ideas have been taken less from books than from the traditional teaching which I have received in the Oxford school of Morphology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Animals The object of this little book is to present a simple account of modern views on the relationships of the chief groups of the animal kingdom, the principal grounds on which the modern classification of these groups may be justified, and an outline of the evidence by which some of the main streams of animal evolution can be traced. The science of comparative anatomy with its theoretical super-structure of phylogeny (the ancestral pedigree of animals) rests so largely upon facts which can only be satisfactorily appreciated by a course of laboratory experience, that it is difficult to present the subject intelligibly to readers who have not already acquired some discipline in zoological science, but, to those who are acquainted with the structure and development of a few types of animals, it may prove instructive to consider some of the wider problems of animal relationship, and to link up their knowledge of special types with a more general appreciation of the probable course organic evolution has taken. Download or read book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint written by John Bigland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of Animals The study of Nature is the basis of Religion; and in the primitive ages of the world, previous to the epoch of revelation, mankind had no other guide to direct them to a knowledge of the existence and attributes of the Deity, than the contemplation of his works. These, indeed, exhibited such evident proofs of his power, his wisdom, and his goodness, as were sufficient to convince rational creatures, that a self-existent and infinite Being was the source and origin of all existence. This St. Paul so well understood, that he condemns the Gentiles, because, after having recognised the Supreme Being in the works of the creation, they neglected to worship him, and considers them as inexcus able; Because, says he, the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Life in Field and Forest: The Animals, Birds, Frogs, and Salamanders One can never tell at what moment some surpris ing demonstration of wild life will occur at one's very doorstep. What with two deer, nine weasels, and a performing bear, all of which appeared in one day last summer close to my studio, I concluded that our tame mountain retreat had relapsed again to the wild and happy conditions of the primitive forest. But I was forced to change my mind a few days after, when an Italian with his organ ground out Johnny, get your gun within forty feet of the spot where the wild deer had stood. Book Primitive Mentality Classic Reprint

Download or read book Primitive Mentality Classic Reprint written by Lucien Levy-Bruhl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Mentality In order to get hold, as it were, of the main point - the processes essential to primitive mentality - I have purposely chosen for my analyses the simplest and least ambiguous Of facts. In this way I hoped to lessen the chances Of error which in so complex a subject are very numerous, and to demonstrate more clearly the actual functioning Of the constituent principles of this mentality. I have consequently adhered to the study of what, to primitives, are the unseen powers by which they feel themselves surrounded on all sides - their dreams, the omens they Observe or incite, ' ordeals, bad death, the extraordinary things brought by white people, their remedies, etc. The reader, therefore, must not expect to find here a study Of primitive mentality as it relates to the technique of uncivilized communities (the inventing and perfecting of tools and weapons, the care of animals, construction of buildings, cultivation Of the soil, and so on), or to their oft-times complex institutions, such as the organization of family life, or totemism.
