Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Heraldry for Americans It is usual to commence American books on heraldic and genealogic matters with a half-apology for introducing such subjects to the notice of the citizens of a republic. The writer believes apologies to be entirely unnecessary. Such topics deserve their due share of attention (though it may not be a large share) in a country which contains millions of descendants of good families of England and the Continent. General George Washington inherited a coat of arms from reputable English ancestors, and used it on appropriate occasions. Benjamin Franklin applied for and obtained a grant of armorial bearings, and his motto was, Exemplum adest ipse homo ("Conduct marks the man"). Where two such Republicans led, Americans need not fear to follow. The writer began his heraldic studies as a school-boy with Scott's novels and Froissart's Chronicles. Book Heraldry in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heraldry in America Classic Reprint written by Eugene Zieber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry in America In America, quite as really as elsewhere, acquaintance with heraldic laws is indispensable to the architect, artist, and author, and to lovers of the fine arts and of literature. How many blunders in our art and absurdities in our literature might have been avoided had not Americans of a certain class assumed lofty indifference to a science they had taken little trouble to under stand! Appreciation of the great works of the brush, the chisel, and the pen that come to us from or are studied by us in other lands must be largely impossible to persons who are unfamiliar with heraldry. Aside from such practical questions, it is always pleasant, as Boutell says, to be familiar with the heraldic blazonry that appears upon the panels of aristocratic carriages. Nor is it less satisfactory when we chance to see a flag displayed and blowing out in the breeze, or when our eyes rest upon an heraldic seal, or when we discover a shield of arms in a book or on a monu ment, or amidst the decorative accessories of some building, to be able to read what heraldry thus has written with her peculiar symbols. Book A Complete Guide to Heraldry Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Complete Guide to Heraldry Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Guide to Heraldry, Vol. 1 The second point, which perhaps is the most important, is the patent fact that Heraldry and Armory are not a dead science, but are an actual living reality. Armory may be a quaint survival of a time with different manners and customs, and different ideas from our own, but the word Finis has not yet been written to the science, which is still slowly developing and altering and changing as it is suited to the altered manners and customs of the present day. I doubt not that this view will be a startling one to many who look upon Armory as indissolubly associated with parchments and writings already musty with age. But so long as the Sovereign has the power to create a new order of Knighthood, and attach thereto Heraldic insignia, so long as the Crown has the power to create'a new coronet, or to order a new ceremonial, so long as new coats of arms are being called into being, - for so long is it idle to treat Armory and Heraldry as a science incapable of further development, or as a science which in recent periods has not altered in its laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Heraldry: With Nearly One Thousand Illustrations Olark's Introduction to Heraldry has now been in existence for upwards of eighty years, and gone through seventeen editions. In presenting the eighteenth to the Public, it is only necessary to say, that in order to secure a continuance of such popularity, the book has undergone complete revision; and by the omission of some exploded theories, and the correction of a few erroneous Opinions, been rendered, it is hoped, a still more trustworthy Hand-book to an Art as useful as it is ornamental - to a Science, the real value of which is daily becoming more apparent in this age of. This book was released on 2017-06-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Principles, and Practice of Heraldry Whether it be indeed the noble science, as some of its enthusiastic votaries have termed it, or, as a later writer has affirmed, the science of fools with long memories, may be a more or less open question; but as it is guided by positive rules, which cannot with impunity be violated, so long as it is employed at all, either in the restoration of old buildings, illumination, glass-painting, or any other field of art, it can only be properly employed after some little attention has been paid to requirements which, though arbitrary in their character, have received the sanction of centuries; and it is not a sufficient reason for the violation of these rules to deride the study as obsolete or absurd, for if the thing be introduced at all, it must be rightly done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Introduction to Heraldry A knowledge of Heraldry has been at all times reckoned among the accomplishments of a gentleman, and considered to form at least a graceful, if not a useful adjunct, in every system of liberal education. In the present day, however, when everything which is calculated to throw light upon the customs and habits of thought of our ancestors during the period of the middle ages is sought for with avidity, it has especial claims upon our notice. If History be indebted for its true exposition to the labours of the antiquary, so is the antiquary indebted to the herald for many of the facts which illustrate his narrative; in marshalling before our view the stirring events of feudal times, the picture which represents the knight would be incomplete without that of the attendant herald, whose duty it was to blazon his arms and give proof of his descent. Nor was the presence of the latter less necessary in the palace of the sovereign, to arrange the pageantry of princes; or in the battle field of the warrior, to apply the knowledge of his art in the melancholy task of reckoning the number of the noble dead, and by his sad inventory of their rank, to measure the amount and import of the victory. Book The Manual of Heraldry

Download or read book The Manual of Heraldry written by Francis J. Grant and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Heraldry: A Concise Description of the Several Terms Used and Containing a Dictionary of Every Designation in the Science The great revival which has taken place in the study and appreciation of the Science of Heraldry, and the wider and more intelligent interest now taken in armory, has induced the publisher to issue a new and revised edition of this work. This opportunity has been taken to enlarge and improve the Dictionary of Heraldic Terms, and to cut out much of the repetition which was contained in the opening chapters of the previous editions. The space thus gained has been used to give a larger and, in the light of modern research, more correct view of the Origin of Arms, and to add chapters on the Law and Right to Arms and on the Heraldic Executive. The chapter formerly given on Precedence has been entirely superseded by inserting the tables now in use in England and in Scotland, and the whole book has been so revised and rewritten as to form practically a new work. Though in the past the science has suffered much from the absurd and pedantic origins assigned not only to it but to the armorial achievements of various families, its use as an aid to historical research has been long proved and recognised. How often has the date of the foundation of some ancient castle or abbey been discovered or a portrait identified from the armorial bearings thereon, and many an important point in genealogy elucidated, by the charges borne by the individual members of the family explaining their matrimonial alliances, their position as cadets, or even the origin of the house itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Heraldry or an Epitome of English Armory: Showing How and by Whom Arms May Be Borne or Acquired, How Pedigrees May Be Traced or Family Histories Ascertained I have long realized the fact that everyone has a Pedigree, and that, whether gentle or simple, all who live beyond the present hour must have an interest, latent possibly in many instances, in those who have gone before them. Therefore I have written this book. I have always found that the great drawback to the majority of Heraldic and Genealogical compilations is their extreme dryness; an enormous mass of uninteresting detail must of necessity be waded through in order to arrive at one single item interesting or applicable to individual cases, whereas it has been my aim to produce something to interest as well as to instruct those who wish to ascertain particulars about their ancestors.
