Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Conversations: Idiomatic Expressions and Proverbs I trust that the persons into whose hands this little book may fall, will understand the spirit in which the "Introductory Dialogue" has been written. There has been no personal interest in the matter, as I am to return to Paris in a few years. I wrote it because it is a pity to see how "Madame de Sevingne's" beautiful language is taught; because I hope to put a check on the fallacious theories of the so-called Natural Methods; as it is high time that somebody did so, in behalf of the French language, for private teachers, for the public, and above all in behalf of education. It is for these reasons that I criticise the so-called Schools of Languages, or rather their natural methods of teaching French, which may be called unnatural for grown people. Those schools, neglecting the study of the verbs, the foundation of languages, have not and cannot have pupils able to speak, to write properly, or even to form simple sentences correctly. Out of one hundred and thirty-nine ladies who attended, for five months, my weekly public lectures (especially advertised for persons having studied French in the so-called Schools of Languages), not a single one was able to put into good French the following sentence: I have not heard anything that I can understand.
